Google is tracking skin tones of people to make its search results ‘more inclusive’ after tech racism fears
GOOGLE has plans to introduce a new scale for measuring skin tones in an attempt to eliminate AI bias. After partnering with Harvard professor Ellis Monk, Google is promoting a new way of identifying skin tones within its products and services. "A lot of the time people feel that they are lumped together into racial categories: the Black category, white category, the Asian category, etc., but in this, there’s all this difference," Monk said. "You need a much more fine-grain complex understanding that will really do justice to this distinction between a broad racial category and all these phenotypic differences across these categories." In response to this need, Monk, an assistant professor of sociology at Harvard, developed the 10-shade Monk Skin Tone Scale (MST). His model is designed to rectify outdated AI skin tone scales which are biased towards lighter skin. When an AI's computer vision (CV) fails to correctly categorize skin color, it can lead to performance … [Read more...] about Google is tracking skin tones of people to make its search results ‘more inclusive’ after tech racism fears
Millennial entrepreneur creates weird and wonderful silk funeral flowers and sells them on TikTok
When a loved one dies, florist Anna Jenkins makes sure that you can have something special to remember them by. No matter how unconventional. At just 22, armed with a textiles degree, Anna started her own business – Silky Bouquets – creating bespoke silk flower tributes for customers. Clients come to her for weddings , baby showers, and all kinds of events – but it is funerals that bring her most of her profits. Customers ask Anna to design specific things they remember their loved ones by, to put on their graves. She has used her floristry skills to create Elvis Presley tributes, Del Boy, Buzz Lightyear, Malteser boxes, swear words to put down the side of the coffin, Peter Rabbit, even specific Chanel lipsticks used by the customer’s loved one. ‘The most interesting tribute I have worked on is the recreation of an old fashioned Romany wagon based on a photo supplied by the family,’ Anna tells Metro.co.uk. ‘The pressure to make sure the design looked just right is … [Read more...] about Millennial entrepreneur creates weird and wonderful silk funeral flowers and sells them on TikTok
4chan founder ‘Moot’ joins Google, says he will bring experience from founding controversial site to search giant
Google has hired the founder of the world’s most controversial chat site, apparently to help with the successors to Google+ . 4chan founder Christopher Poole, better known as “Moot”, will be joining the search giant apparently to advise on its new social products. Mr Poole left 4chan last year, 12 years after founding the site at 15. Mr Poole’s creation, 4chan, was established as a way for Manga fans to chat and would go on to create many of the most popular parts of internet culture. But it was also regularly criticised for offensive and malicious jokes that were most famously seen in the response to the leak of naked pictures of celebrities in 2014. Now Google has confirmed that Mr Poole will go on to work with Bradley Horowitz, a Google engineer who leads streams, photos and sharing . That is Google’s names for the products that were spun out of Google+ — the social network that had trouble taking off and has since been swapped for individual products. … [Read more...] about 4chan founder ‘Moot’ joins Google, says he will bring experience from founding controversial site to search giant

When Paloma moved into her Norbury flat last November, she knew she wanted to give the bathroom a refresh. However, with a limited budget she decided to transform her bathroom tiles with just a senticil, paint and little creativity. The 31-year-old tells Metro.co.uk: ‘I had a clear objective to find the ideal bathroom set up when I started looking for houses. ‘However, since I didn’t have a big budget, I could neither find a house with the perfect bathroom nor afford a big renovation on an existing one. ‘After finding my ideal home, I knew I was going to try and flip some things around, so I did a lot of research on how to renovate the bathroom myself via “quick fixes.” ‘I loved the patterned tiles in the new-builds I visited, and they are now all over the interior decoration magazines and Pinterest, so I came across videos of people painting over their tiles and transforming them into the patterned ones I liked so I had to try it myself.’ As her tiles already had … [Read more...] about Woman shares how she transformed her bathroom tiles with paint and a stencil for just £35
