BUTLIN'S has always been a staple of the great British summer — and incredible black-and-white photos from the 1950s prove it. Since the first Skegness camp was opened by Billy Butlin in 1936, Brits have enjoyed fun, activity filled holidays while being entertained by the famous Redcoats. During the Second World War, the camps in Skegness and Clacton were given over for military use. But when they re-opened after the war, along with new camps at Ayr, Filey, and Pwllheli, the chain became incredibly popular. Suddenly, families were able to afford staycations, as family entertainment and activities at Butlin's became available for the equivalent of a week's pay. A day out at the pictures is always a treat and it was no different in the heyday of the Odeon in Hartlepool. We wanted your memories of it, including the films you saw there.Dozens of you responded and told us all about those special occasions. Coronation Street star Lucy Fallon looked sweet in ice cream shades at the NHS Heroes Awards as she spoke of her love for co-star Kym Marsh. Lucy, who plays Corrie favourite Bethany Platt, rocked the red carpet in pastels at the ceremony held in London’s Park Lane. More than 100 people attended The Spring Festival Retro Cruise 2018 in Kyiv on May 12. Attendees wore stylish old-fashioned outfits and arrived on their bicycles. Their rode through city downtown in a column and afterward drove to 97 Saksahanskoho Street, where the main part of the festival was organized. There, a stage with a band and an improvised dance floor had been set up in a cozy backyard. There were also people selling authentic old-fashioned and vintage clothing and accessories. Bartenders prepared refreshments, and also there was an ice cream maestro. For children, there was a special entertainment program where children could draw and play. At the event, there were several retro fashion contests organized for the most beautiful outfit in women, men and children’s categories.
