With the government on course for a historic defeat next week on Theresa May’s deal, this is the point in the campaign that Downing Street had hoped to see MPs coming round. Alas not. So, it was a curious choice by the government to allow ITV exclusive access to Chief Whip Julian Smith’s attempts to woo unruly MPs. Smith was filmed trying to convince Leaver Philip Davies to back the deal: ITV News was granted rare access to the Chief Whip's office, as he tries to rally support for the PM's Brexit deal ahead of Tuesday's vote.https://t.co/KHDQTdnQtA pic.twitter.com/MJjE7vdaXb — ITV News (@itvnews) December 6, 2018 What ever the intention, Mr S know who he thinks emerges as the voice of reason… Most Popular ReadRecentRead Why Theresa May has decided to postpone the Brexit vote Katy Balls … [Read more...] about Watch: Chief Whip’s failed attempt to woo Philip Davies over Brexit

Philip Davies: Why I still have no confidence in Theresa May or her Brexit deal
0 Have your say IT has been widely reported that I have signed a letter of no confidence in Theresa May and I would like to explain why I still believe this to be right. In 2016, people voted in a historic referendum to leave the EU and Theresa May said she would deliver Brexit. She was also elected on her own manifesto in 2017 to do just that.Andrea Jenkyns: The public will discard us – and rightly so – if Brexit is thwartedAs many will know, I have been a Eurosceptic for a very long time. I wanted Britain to leave the EU – not only because of the huge stranglehold and undue influence it had over us as a country, but because I believed Brexit to be one of the most exciting opportunities of my lifetime. So, I share the frustration of those who voted to leave the EU who cannot understand how unnecessarily difficult we have made this.Bernard Ingham: Will the nation stomach this dog’s breakfast Brexit? The EU was always going to make it hard … [Read more...] about Philip Davies: Why I still have no confidence in Theresa May or her Brexit deal
Philip Davies: Why Shipley and Keighley should break away from Bradford Council
0 Have your say THE Labour-controlled Bradford Council continues to prioritise spending in its city centre heartlands, concrete over the green belt in the Shipley constituency, raise council tax by the maximum amount every year and cut services disproportionately in the outlying areas. It is for these reasons I have launched a campaign to separate Shipley and Keighley parliamentary constituencies from Bradford council to create a new local authority – a promise I made to my constituents in the 2017 General Election. The distribution of council revenue in the Bradford district remains unfair. The Shipley and Keighley constituencies are the largest and second largest council tax revenue generators for Bradford Council, but clearly – in my opinion – see the least returns. Not only is Shipley, my constituency, billed the most in council tax by Bradford Council, it is also the most likely to make those council tax payments. City ward in Bradford pays … [Read more...] about Philip Davies: Why Shipley and Keighley should break away from Bradford Council
Philip Davies: Time we started talking up the North
0 Have your say THESE are good times for Yorkshire and the North. Unemployment is low and falling. Education standards are rising. Exports are growing. More than ever we have the potential to be a magnet for inward investment from around the world. Far from Brexit bringing uncertainties, Britain remains the most popular destination in Europe for inward investment, and the North deserves a big share of that. But time and again we hear the Labour leaders of Northern councils talk of counties and cities that are being left behind and ignored by the Government. It’s just not true, and it does this great county and the North of England as a whole a huge disservice. You might think that all the transport investment is going to the South, and that the North is lucky to get more than a handful of crumbs from the table. It’s nonsense. If you don’t believe me, just take a look at the things that are happening right … [Read more...] about Philip Davies: Time we started talking up the North
The Yorkshire Post says: Brexit divisions. The irony as MP Philip Davies tells Theresa May to quit
0 Have your say ONE in, one out. The decision of Shipley MP Philip Davies to submit a letter of no confidence in Theresa May, citing a breakdown of trust over Brexit, comes 24 hours after Simon Clarke – the MP for Middlesbrough South and East Cleveland – withdrew his call for a leadership election. Evidence that Brexiteers are divided on tactics, and their approach, the move by Mr Davies is unsurprising after his majority was cut at the last election. Yet, given that he has previously stated that he will never accept a Ministerial or front bench role, it’s ironic that he should go public with his call for Mrs May to quit when the Prime Minister and Dominic Raab, the new Brexit Secretary, are getting on with the job and could do with some support from their so-called colleagues. As Mr Raab, a lawyer by trade, made his first trip to Brussels for face-to-face talks with the EU’s chief negotiator Michel Barnier, it already appears that he will … [Read more...] about The Yorkshire Post says: Brexit divisions.
