T he pound is facing an “existential crisis” and is likely to weaken further during this year, one of Wall Street’s top banks has warned. Bank of America says sterling “finds itself in an increasingly invidious position” for reasons including “increasingly challenging” Bank of England communication. Kamal Sharma, a London-based foreign exchange strategist for the lender, said the outlook for the pound was “grim”. The warnings came as the price of oil breached $120 (£95) a barrel on Monday, hitting a two-month high amid tightness in the market and concern over supplies. Oil prices have risen amid tight supply driven by the fallout from Russia’s war in Ukraine, as well as increased demand as more economies return from Covid-related restrictions. China announced easing of its restrictions, while the European Union worked on a plan to ban imports of Russian crude. The pound has fallen about 6.6pc this year in dollar terms, leaving it as one of the worst performers among the … [Read more...] about Pound faces ‘existential crisis’, Bank of America warns

Queen St: Swarbrick wants it pedestrianised, but what do mayoral hopefuls think?
LAWRENCE SMITH/Stuff More than two dozen shops are empty on Auckland's Queen Street as the economic effect of Covid-19 begins to bite. (April 2020) Chlöe Swarbrick has launched a petition calling for the pedestrianisation of Queen St . The local MP for Auckland Central, alongside the City Centre Residents’ Group, launched the petition on Tuesday calling on Mayor Phil Goff to rid Auckland’s “golden mile” of vehicles. Queen St is currently being upgraded to make it more people friendly for the 40,000 residents in the central city, but it is only a partial pedestrianisation. Swarbrick wants cars entirely gone. “It’s fundamentally about equitable and fair access for everyone in our city centre, whether they be someone with disabilities, parents with prams, local residents or those on their way to work,” Swarbrick said. “The current layout of Queen Street is far from that vision.” READ MORE: City of Colour: Auckland will be bursting with colour this May Future … [Read more...] about Queen St: Swarbrick wants it pedestrianised, but what do mayoral hopefuls think?
Child care costs to be cut to help parents through cost of living crisis
Boris Johnson will this week announce plans to relax childcare rules in order to save families £40 per week. A package of measures to bring down the cost of child care will include increasing the number of toddlers each adult can look after in nurseries, and allowing childminders to spend more time working from locations such as village halls, rather than their own homes. The changes, which will be subject to a consultation, are designed to bring down the costs of nursery fees, which have reached an average of £265 a week for two-year-olds, compared to £236 a week for childminders. Ministers are expected to claim that the proposals would save families £40 a week. Under plans being overseen by Nadhim Zahawi, the Education Secretary, ministers will also pledge to help more people to become childminders by relaxing the rules on where they can work. Currently, childminders are expected to care for children in their own home, or someone else’s residential property, but in many … [Read more...] about Child care costs to be cut to help parents through cost of living crisis
