Election head Wafula Chebukati has urged people to be patient and not to panic that media houses are releasing differing tallies. Each organisation is making calculations based on its own manual entry of data from more than 46,000 polling stations. But it is only the electoral commission that can declare the winner. The media's tallies show that the two leading candidates - Raila Odinga and William Ruto - are neck and neck. "There should be no panic about the differences we are seeing on the media screens. The results are from the same public portal; the approach [of each broadcaster] is different," Mr Chebukati, the chairperson of the … [Read more...] about Kenya Election 2022: Why the count is taking so long

Tory leadership election: Meet the overseas voters picking the next PM
By Joshua Nevett Published 3 hours ago Share close Share page Copy link About sharing Related Topics Tory leadership Beyond the shores of the UK, a small community of devoted Conservative supporters have had their eyes glued to the twists and turns of the party's leadership contest. As paid-up Conservative members who joined at least three months before the ballot closes, they get a vote in the election to pick the next British prime minister. Under party rules, these overseas members do not need British citizenship to cast a ballot, nor the right to vote in a UK general election. Provided they paid their annual membership fee, they can have a role in shaping the political future of the UK - as Giuseppe Dottore did this month. He is part of a voter base that makes up about 1% of the party's estimated 160,000-strong membership. Boris Johnson: What is a vote of no confidence?
Published 13 July Share close Share page Copy link About sharing The government has said it will introduce a confidence motion in itself. It had previously rejected the no-confidence motion proposed by the Labour Party because it referred to the prime minister. A vote is expected next week, before the result of the ongoing Conservative leadership contest is due. Boris Johnson resignation: What happens now? No 10 blocks Labour no confidence vote plan What is a no-confidence vote? It's a vote in which MPs from all parties decide whether they want the government to continue. It can trigger a general election and could see a new prime minister appointed. While any MP can propose a no-confidence motion, there's no guarantee their request will be granted. However, if the leader of the opposition - currently Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer - introduces the motion, … [Read more...] about Boris Johnson: What is a vote of no confidence?
Is indyref2 showdown Nicola Sturgeon’s last stand?
By Philip Sim Published 2 hours ago Share close Share page Copy link About sharing Nicola Sturgeon's future is again the subject of speculation after the first minister said during an Edinburgh Fringe interview that she had not yet decided whether she would lead the SNP into the next Scottish Parliament election. She also stated clearly that she is "up for the challenge" and is looking forward to a fresh independence referendum - but with her cards on the table about that vote, we may be already at the point where we can map out what her future looks like. It is inextricably linked to the issue of independence - and how that plays out is likely to be the defining act of her career. Why has this come up again? First of all, if Nicola Sturgeon is reading this, I imagine she is already rolling her eyes. Her latest comments were made during a fairly light-hearted Edinburgh … [Read more...] about Is indyref2 showdown Nicola Sturgeon’s last stand?

Boris Johnson: Resignations exceed 50 but PM stays in post
By Andre Rhoden-Paul & Dulcie Lee Published 7 July Share close Share page Copy link About sharing Boris Johnson remains as prime minister despite his two most recent cabinet appointments calling for him to resign. Chancellor Nadhim Zahawi, who was given the job two days ago, said the situation was "not sustainable and will only get worse". And Education Secretary Michelle Donelan quit, saying Mr Johnson had "put us in an impossible situation". But Mr Johnson insists he has a "colossal mandate to keep going". The wave of resignations from the government and party exceeded 50 on Thursday, as Northern Ireland Secretary Brandon Lewis became the first cabinet member of the day to quit, quickly followed by seven other ministers. Liz Truss extends lead over Rishi Sunak in Tory leadership poll
Liz Truss has extended her lead over Rishi Sunak in the Tory leadership race , according to a poll of party members by YouGov. The new survey put Ms Truss, the Foreign Secretary, on 60 per cent of the vote and Mr Sunak, the former chancellor, on 26 per cent. That lead of 34 percentage points among decided Tory members is bigger than the previous YouGov poll last month , which put Ms Truss 18 points ahead. But doubts remain about the reliability of Tory membership polling. Far fewer such polls are carried out than general voter polling before elections. Sir John Curtice, a leading polling expert, said that Mr Truss is likely to hold a “narrower” lead than thought after one survey put her only five points ahead of Mr Sunak. Writing for The Telegraph , he cautioned against reading too much into the limited number of studies into the attitudes of Conservative Party members that have been carried out. His remarks came as other experts warned that polls of party members are … [Read more...] about Liz Truss extends lead over Rishi Sunak in Tory leadership poll

The next president must prioritize destroying the Deep State | Opinion
At CPAC in Dallas this past weekend, former President Donald Trump asserted that a "key priority for the next Congress and the next president will be to drain the swamp, once and for all." Then, reiterating a point made in a keynote address to the America First Policy Institute last month, he specified that Congress "should pass groundbreaking reform empowering the president to ensure that any federal employee who is corrupt, incompetent, or unnecessary for the job can be told, 'You're fired.'" Such legislation would essentially formalize and strengthen President Trump's Executive Order 13957 , which President Joe Biden rescinded during his first week in office. But there's a problem: The chance of even a Republican-controlled Congress carrying out this type of reform is close to zero. You see, Congress itself created—and, indeed, has since protected and bolstered—the Deep State, so there's little reason to believe it would now reverse course and eliminate it. A few … [Read more...] about The next president must prioritize destroying the Deep State | Opinion
