Vaccines made from deadly bug e.coli could be used to prevent pneumonia, meningitis and cancer

· July 2, 2016 ·

A superbug normally associated with serious food poisoning could be harnessed by scientists to prevent pneumonia, meningitis and even cancer. Research shows E.coli bacteria could deliver tomorrow's vaccines with expert precision and at very little cost. Ingesting some strains of E.coli can cause crippling stomach pains, chronic diarrhoea and even death, but the majority are safe and beneficial to the digestive system. Using one of the safe varieties scientists have developed an E.coli-based transport capsule, which will home in on specific immune cells. Author Professor Blaine Pfeifer, from the University at Buffalo, New York, said: "It's a bit counter-intuitive given what you here about E. coli. I hate spending money, I haven’t done any laundry for three years and I NEVER use toilet paper

· March 7, 2021 ·

A FRUGAL woman who “hates spending money” has revealed her extreme money-saving ways, including never buying toilet paper. Kate Hashimoto, lives in New York, and has found a way of avoiding paying for almost everything in her life. Speaking on TLC’s Extreme Cheapskates, she says: “I have lived in New York for three years, although it’s the most expensive city to live in I have found ways to get around it. “If I have to spend money, I try and avoid it, I will try and pay as little as possible.” With a budget of just $200 a month in living expenses, Kate finds ways to reuse whatever she can to make her money go further. “If I am drying my hands in a public bathroom, I am drying off hands that I washed clean so I keep them and reuse them,” she explains. Kate has never paid money for furniture, and instead sources her stuff from skips and off the street. She says: “I furnished my place by picking up discarded furniture on the street before the trash picks it up, I … [Read more...] about I hate spending money, I haven’t done any laundry for three years and I NEVER use toilet paper

Doctor shares gross dust mites warning if you’re still using old pillows

· March 1, 2021 ·

Bedroom pillows are something we use every single night and come to rely on to give us a good night's sleep. But our pillows and duvets are often forgotten about, sometimes being left for months or even years without being washed, let alone replaced. If you're one of those people, a doctor has now released a video explaining why you should be buying new pillows every two years - and it might be enough to change your mind. Dr Karan Raj has racked up millions of views on TikTok sharing everything from medical advice and facts, to sleep methods, to behind-the-scenes looks as life as a doctor. In a video captioned: 'You need to change your pillows at least every two years', he explains: "The average person sheds about 4kg of skin every year. Most of that ends up on your bed or pillow - a feast for microscopic dust mites. "A single dust mite has about 20 droppings each day, multiple that by the hundreds of mites living on your pillow. "A build up of dust mite faeces can … [Read more...] about Doctor shares gross dust mites warning if you’re still using old pillows

Google image search cements national stereotypes of ‘racy’ women

· January 7, 2021 ·

Google Images is the public face of everything: When you want to see what something looks like, you will probably just Google it. A data-driven investigation by DW that analysed over 20,000 images and websites reveals an inherent bias in the search giant's algorithms . Image searches for the expressions "Brazilian women," "Thai women"or "Ukrainian women," for instance, show results that are more likely to be "racy” than the results that show up when searching for "American women," according to Google's own image analysis software. Similarly, after a search for "German women," you are likely to see more pictures of politicians and athletes. A search for Dominican or Brazilian women, on the other hand, will be met with rows and rows of young ladies wearing swimsuits and in sexy poses. Screenshots of Google image search results for "German women" (left) vs "Brazilian women" (right) This pattern is already visible to the naked eye and can be attested with a simple search … [Read more...] about Google image search cements national stereotypes of ‘racy’ women

· February 23, 2021 ·

Holidays abroad will not be allowed for another three months at the earliest, Boris Johnson revealed as he set out his roadmap out of lockdown for England. International travel may be allowed to resume on May 17, but this is subject to review and depends on what happens with UK infection rates, among other issues. However that caveat hasn't stopped many of us pinning our hopes on finally having a proper break this summer. The travel industry has expressed relief at the prospect of people in England being allowed to take summer holidays.
