If you drive a car, you'll almost certainly have insurance to pay for any damage caused by a road accident. Driving comes with risk — of damage to personal property, and even death. But driving presents another risk. Emissions from our cars, factories and energy systems are making the planet a more dangerous place. And that risk won't be covered by your insurance policy, no matter how comprehensive it is. Unlike the consequences of a dangerous driving incident, the environmental damage caused by fossil fuel emissions is likely to fall on someone else. These are often people who live in parts of the world who haven't benefited from fossil-fuel driven development: subsistence farmers in Africa; the inhabitants of remote, low-lying islands disappearing under the Pacific Ocean; or Caribbean coastal communities unable to cope with ever-more frequent hurricanes, to name just a few. Yet some of these people — or their governments — are taking out their own insurance policies … [Read more...] about Climate risk: Insuring against the inevitable

Boris Johnson today said he didn’t know how much money Russian oligarchs had donated to the Conservatives. If it helps, Prime Minister, we can tell you. Since 2010 Russian donors have given £3.5million to the Tories. Some of this money has come from people with links to President Vladimir Putin’s regime and has been used to buy access to senior Tory politicians, including Johnson. Perhaps it is just a coincidence that the Tories have been reluctant to bring in new laws that would freeze the assets of those linked to corruption and human rights abuses? It goes some way to explaining why the Prime Minister is refusing to release a report by the Intelligence and Security Committee on alleged Russian meddling in British politics. The report is understood to examine the Tory reliance on Russian donors and whether Putin interfered in the EU referendum. The Tories’ refusal to publish the report suggests they have something to hide. By withholding the document … [Read more...] about Voice of the Mirror: Boris Johnson is insulting electorate over Russia report
Prince Philip was in a car crash in which everybody lived. But imagine, for a moment, that one little thing was different. "Britain has been plunged into mourning by the death of Prince Philip in an horrific car accident. "In a tragic echo of Princess Diana's death 21 years ago, it is thought he was not wearing a seatbelt. The Queen's 'strength and stay' of 71 years was killed after he stopped his Land Rover at a junction and was hit by a second vehicle..." Or perhaps: "A Greek migrant is being hunted by police after crashing into a car carrying a young mum and baby on their way home from a day at the beach. The identity of the man, considered a menace by local road users, is known to officers. It is thought he is married to a local woman, although it is not clear whether he has a legal right to remain in the UK..." Or even: "Third-in-line to the throne Prince George escaped unscathed after his mum the Duchess of Cambridge's car was in a smash on a death-trap road. The woman driver … [Read more...] about If the Royals were normal they’d all have an ASBO – it’s time to get these loons off our roads
I write to alert your readers to the extraordinary behaviour of the car hire firm Easirent’s Dublin airport branch. Having paid £48 for the three-day hire, I was talked into taking out extra insurance which would reduce the damage excess to zero – for which I paid £142. The estate car I had booked was not available so we were upgraded to a seven-seater I was told was so new it was unlikely to have any damage on it. As soon as I returned the vehicle, the same agent immediately noted scuff marks to the wing mirror, but assured me that, as I had paid for the insurance, I would not be charged. Then came the bombshell – there was a €70, or £62, admin charge to process this supposedly “new damage”. I have complained to no avail, and have since found terrible reviews of this company. GT, London I have been writing about car hire firms for 15 years and thought I had seen every hidden charge in the book, but this admin fee is arguably the … [Read more...] about Is this £62 Easirent admin fee the greediest yet?
A sugar daddy millionaire accused of murdering a £10,000-a-month escort was left 'devastated" after discovering she was planning to blackmail him with X-rated pictures - a court has heard. Peter Morgan, 54, is accused of strangling Georgina Symonds, 25, at her bungalow after she allegedly planned to threaten to blackmail him with intimate photos and video. Morgan, a successful property developer worth £20 million, had paid the former burlesque dancer to be his personal escort as well as allowing her to live rent-free in the bungalow in Newport, south Wales. He denies murder on the grounds of diminished responsibility, saying he suffers from Asperger's Syndrome. Newport Crown Court heard Miss Symonds had pictures of Morgan engaging in threesomes at his family home, Beech Hill Farm in Usk, Gwent, as well as images of her wearing his wife Helen's dressing gown. The dad-of-two told the court Miss Symonds had previously spoken of blackmailing other clients including one from … [Read more...] about Multi-millionaire accused of murdering £10,000-a-month escort ‘was “devastated” by plan to blackmail him with X-rated pictures’
