WhatsApp introduces video and voice calls on desktop version

· March 4, 2021 ·

WhatsApp is allowing users to make video and voice calls on their desktop for the first time. The messaging service plans to rival the likes of Microsoft 's Skype and Apple 's FaceTime by offering people the chance to voice or video call on a larger screen. WhatsApp said it made the move following a "significant increase" in people making calls on the platform during the coronavirus pandemic, when other video calling services like Zoom have also seen huge spikes in popularity. Group calls will still have to be made on mobile devices, but the Facebook -owned app has confirmed it is planning to expand its desktop offering to group calls in the future. "Answering on a bigger screen makes it easier to work with colleagues, see your family more clearly on a bigger canvas or free up your hands to move around a room while talking," a WhatsApp spokesperson said in a blog post. COVID-19: Test and Trace ‘barely used’ check-in data from pubs and restaurants – with thousands not warned of infection risk

· March 4, 2021 ·

Check-in data from hundreds of millions of people who visited pubs, restaurants and hairdressers before lockdown was barely used by Test and Trace, according to a confidential report obtained by Sky News. The report admits that the failure of the £22bn service to use the data for alerts or contact tracing meant "thousands of people" were not warned they might be at risk of infection, "potentially leading to the spread of the virus." Live COVID updates from the UK and around the world To make matters worse, when coronavirus data from venues was used, public health officials encouraged pubs and restaurants to contact customers directly - a breach of data protection law which could leave businesses facing legal action. The report says that lack of guidance from Test and Trace for local public health teams on how to use the data left businesses "being asked to, or volunteering, to contact customers and visitors". TikTok user @stephaniebothrealto r – whose name is Stephanie Booth, according to her profile – shared the food tip with her followers. She revealed how to "fix" non-resealable bags. First, she revealed the bag had been opened at the top. Holding the open end of the bag, she cut a triangle shape in the middle to leave an open "V". "Tie the two ends together to seal," she said in text over the clip. She showed herself grabbing the two flaps left on the side – and knotted the bag in the center. The result left the bag sealed with no extra clips or gadgets. "There you have it quick and easy," Stephanie said. Amazon changes its new smartphone app logo after shoppers say it reminds them of a smirking Adolf Hitler

· March 2, 2021 ·

Amazon has changed the new logo of its smartphone app after users said the initial version reminded them of a smirking Adolf Hitler. The sales giant recently ditched its old logo, featuring the familiar symbol of a shopping cart, in favour of a brown Amazon box with a piece of tape with a jagged edge at the top. But combined with the smile-shaped arrow which also forms part of Amazon's branding, the tape looked like it could be part of a face - with what some shoppers thought was an uncomfortable resemblance to the dictator's distinctive moustache. The logo has since been changed again, with the tape now folded over in one corner and straight around the edges rather than jagged. Unlikely comparison: Amazon's first attempt at a new logo for its smartphone app (left) led some surprised shoppers to compare the image to Adolf Hitler (right) One user noticed the dubious logo on Sunday, saying: 'Well it happened.. my Amazon app icon finally updated to the … [Read more...] about Amazon changes its new smartphone app logo after shoppers say it reminds them of a smirking Adolf Hitler

George Floyd: US House of Representatives approves police reform bill banning chokeholds

· March 4, 2021 ·

A police reform bill in honour of George Floyd that will ban chokeholds and "qualified immunity" for law enforcement officials has been passed by the US House of Representatives. The George Floyd Justice in Policing Act would also ban no-knock warrants, mandate data collection on police encounters, prohibit racial and religious profiling and redirect funding to community-based policing programs. The 220-212 vote comes nine months after Mr Floyd , a black man, died when a police officer in Minneapolis pressed a knee on his neck for several minutes. As he died, Mr Floyd was repeatedly heard to say: "I can't breathe." His death in May 2020 prompted massive protests across the US and around the world calling for an end to racial injustice and police brutality.
