Here's what's happening Thursday with the coronavirus pandemic in the U.S.: THREE THINGS TO KNOW TODAY — House Republicans shot down a Democratic bid on Thursday to pass President Donald Trump’s longshot, end-of-session demand for $2,000 direct payments to most Americans before signing a long-overdue COVID-19 relief bill. The vote shifts attention to whether Trump will follow through on his implied threat to veto the bill, which would likely cause a partial government shutdown and delay the $600 direct payments that the bill does contain. — California became the first state to record 2 million confirmed coronavirus cases reaching the milestone on Christmas Eve as close to the entire state was under a strict stay-at-home order and hospitals were flooded with the largest crush of cases since the pandemic began. — Schools nationwide have scrambled to get students outdoors during the pandemic to keep them safe and stop the spread of COVID-19. Some schools in the … [Read more...] about VIRUS TODAY: Relief bill in limbo, California hits 2M cases

Rafael Nadal insists he will stand up for Russian tennis players banned from Wimbledon
Rafael Nadal says that he will continue to oppose Wimbledon’s ban on Russian players and will stand up for the rights of those who are barred from competing in tennis’ most prestigious tournament due to the ongoing war in Ukraine. The Lawn Tennis Association declared in April that it would be following the precedent set by other organisation including FIFA , UEFA, and Eurovision by banning Russians from competing in high profile international events, in order to render the Russian state a sporting and cultural outcast following president Vladimir Putin’s devastating invasion of neighbouring Ukraine . The United Nations estimates that over six million people have fled Ukraine since the assault began across land, air, and sea in late February, while cities including Mariupol, Kharkiv and Kherson have been decimated by shelling. Belarussian players have also been banned due to their nation’s practical support for the invasion. A statement from the All England Club … [Read more...] about Rafael Nadal insists he will stand up for Russian tennis players banned from Wimbledon
Want unfettered free speech? Get far-right attacks like the Buffalo shooting
On Saturday 14 May, an 18-year-old man walked into a supermarket in Buffalo and shot 13 people, killing 10 . A few days before carrying out the killings, the shooter published a 180-page manifesto on Google Docs detailing his motives, which were largely racist and antisemitic in nature. Similarly to Brenton Tarrant , who massacred 51 people and injured 40 others at a mosque in Christchurch, New Zealand in 2019, the Buffalo shooter attributed the views which caused him to carry out the killings to 4chan ; an online message board-based forum where users are able to post completely anonymously and with very little in the way of oversight or restrictions. 4chan, along with similar websites like 8chan – another anonymous forum which has also been cited by mass shooters – have a reputation for attracting the absolute human detritus of the internet. Their refusal to provide oversight to their users predictably result in them becoming hotbeds of neo-Nazi rhetoric, … [Read more...] about Want unfettered free speech? A tragic death has brought out all the usual Jew-haters and Israel-haters | Opinion
It is an utter tragedy that Palestinian-American journalist Shireen Abu Akleh was killed last week while covering an Israeli military operation. It is also patently absurd to frame this tragedy as Israel "murdering" Palestinians with no accountability, as antisemitic Reps. Rashida Tlaib (D-MI) and Ilhan Omar (D-MN) keep insanely tweeting. Here is what we know: On May 11, Israel Defense Force (IDF) soldiers, along with officers in the Israel Security Authority and the Border Police , conducted a counterterrorism operation in the Jenin area to arrest several suspects as part of their investigation into the recent wave of terror attacks that has killed 19 innocent people in Israel over the past two months. During the operation, Palestinian gunmen fired indicriminately at the Israelis, who returned fire. Toward the end of the exchange, Ms. Abu Akleh, who was covering the situation for Al Jazeera , was hit by a stray bullet and killed. (Aside: Reps. Tlaib and Omar, if … [Read more...] about A tragic death has brought out all the usual Jew-haters and Israel-haters | Opinion

I’m a fertility doctor – here’s the exact number of times a week you should have sex to get pregnant
TRYING to have a baby is an all consuming business. Hopeful parents can become obsessed with apps and tests that track ovulation and tell them when they should have sex. But a fertility expert has said there is no need for that. According to Professor Adam Balen, former chairman of the British Fertility Society, you just need to have regular sex - about three times a week. He said it truly is that simple, and by focussing so much on ovulation, couples might forget to have sex at other times too. He told the Daily Mail : "Couples should ideally be having sex every other day to maximise their chances of having a baby. Margaret Thatcher statue egged by protester two hours after it’s unveiled
A £300,000 statue of Margaret Thatcher has been egged within two hours of it being lowered into place in her home town. More than three years after plans were first approved, the 10ft-high granite memorial of the controversial prime minister was unveiled in Grantham, Lincolnshire, today. Footage from this morning shows a man hurling eggs at the statue in front of shocked onlookers. He can be seen walking off after one of them eventually hit the massive sculpture at St Peter’s Hill. The incident should not come as a surprise after more than 13,000 people showed interest in such a protest two years ago. Originally intended for Parliament Square in Westminster, it was moved to the town due to fears of a ‘motivated far-left movement… who may be committed to public activism’. After a large-scale £100,000 unveiling ceremony was approved by South Kesteven District Council in 2020, a Facebook group proposed an ‘egg-throwing contest’ at the event. More than 2,400 … [Read more...] about Margaret Thatcher statue egged by protester two hours after it’s unveiled
Weekend Hot Topic: The most overrated video game ever
Readers discuss the games they feel don’t deserve their good reputation, including classics such as Halo and Bloodborne. The subject for this weekend’s Inbox was suggested by reader Gadfly and didn’t necessarily have to be about games that are considered classics, but just titles you think are undeserving of their critical acclaim. There were plenty of sacred cows being sacrificed, although in many cases people were happy to admit the game was good – it just wasn’t for them. A discouraging word Except, when you look beyond the surface, it is a pretty average third person shooter with a very basic mission structure (travel here, shoot things, travel back, repeat), a padded story which is so self-indulgent it won’t even let you skip the inane chatter between characters on the way to missions. In my opinion Rockstar seemed totally fixated on the technical side of the game they completely forgot to inject any fun into it. To be fair, they did a good job. The … [Read more...] about Weekend Hot Topic: The most overrated video game ever
