LIZ Truss was handed another boost to her thundering PM campaign today as a pack of top Tories declared their support. Eleven Conservative whips came out to back the Foreign Secretary en masse in a blow to Rishi Sunak's underdog bid for leader. Three Tory MPs have already jumped ship from the former Chancellor to Ms Truss as she looks set to sweep into No10. Every household in Britain will be getting a £400 grant to help them pay their soaring energy bills. Former Chancellor Rishi Sunak announced the measures in May, as part of a plan to help with the cost of living crisis. Initially, the chancellor offered a £200 loan for energy bills, to be paid back over the coming years. This was changed to £400, and made into a non-repayable grant , and called the Energy Bills Support Scheme. It’s welcome news for many – as Ofgem has announced another energy price cap rise for October , with subsequent changes forecast for January 2023, then every three months . But when will it be paid? A grant of £400 will help struggling households cope with the energy bills crisis. Previously, a £200 loan in place for UK families was expected to be paid back. Rishi Sunak announced today this would no longer be the case, and increased its sum to £400. All households with a domestic electricity connection will be automatically eligible for the grant. Mr Sunak said: ‘The outlook for energy prices has changed. I’ve decided those repayments will be cancelled. So, for the avoidance of doubt, this support is now unambiguously a grant. ‘Furthermore, we have decided that the £200 of support for household energy bills will be doubled to £400 for everyone.’ He told the Commons: ‘We are on the side of hard working families with £6 billion of financial support.’ The grant comes in the form of a council tax rebate to households.
