Tobermore’s Adam McLean is eyeing a strong start to the new Irish road racing season at this month’s KDM Hire Cookstown 100, which was launched last night. McLean is one of the sport’s hottest properties and the young prospect has been focusing on building his experience with the McAdoo Racing Kawasaki ZX-10R during pre-season testing.He twice finished on the podium at the opening round of the Ulster Superbike Championship last weekend at Bishopscourt, with McLean using the event as preparation for the first roads meeting of 2019.The 22-year-old was the man of the meeting at Cookstown last year, winning the Supertwin race and claiming two podium results in the Supersport class.McLean said: “I’ve been doing a fair bit of testing and we were over in Spain in March. Guy Martin is poised to make his Irish road racing return after entering next month’s KDM Hire Cookstown 100. The TV celebrity and former leading international road racer plans to compete in the Classic Senior race on his home-built 750cc BSA Rocket 3. Martin intended to ride the machine at the Cookstown 100 and Tandragee 100 meetings in 2018 but had to withdraw after running into gearbox problems.Unable to acquire the parts he needed in time to take part, the 37-year-old promised he would return this season.He was heavily criticised on social media after pulling out days before the event last year, but the 11-time Ulster Grand Prix winner has submitted an entry to the organising Cookstown and District Motorcycle Club and is expected to be on the grid for the opening Irish national road race of the season in Co. The full list of dates for the 2019 Irish road racing season has been finalised, with 12 national and international races scheduled in all. Once again, the Mid Antrim 150 is absent from the calendar, although the organising club remains committed to reviving the race in the future. The Kells Club also hopes to run their meeting next season and the event has been pencilled in for June 14-15, while the Enniskillen Road Races – held for the first time in the summer – will take place from June 28-29. Confirmation of Peter Hickman’s decision to remain with the Smiths Racing team to ride the BMW S1000RR has seen a major piece of the international road racing jigsaw fall into place for 2019. Hickman is the man of the moment, winning races this year at the North West 200, Isle of Man TT, Ulster Grand Prix and Macau Grand Prix. He also set a new world road racing lap record at over 135mph on his way to victory in the Senior TT in June. The Louth man will be aiming to build on his success next season and the familiarity of the Smiths Racing team and the S1000RR will be a significant plus.Bradford’s Dean Harrison has also opted to stay put with the Silicone Engineering Kawasaki team. A week later, the Tandragee 100 in County Armagh will be held from Friday, May 3-4 prior to the North West 200, which will be the first of the major international meetings.Practice for the North West 200 will commence on Tuesday, May 14, with final qualifying and the opening races taking place on Thursday, May 16.The main race programme, including both headline Superbike races, will be held on Saturday, May 18.In a tight turnaround, practice is scheduled to get underway for the Isle of Man TT only one week later on Saturday, May 25.
