Interest is the cost you pay to borrow money. And though it's just one part of your monthly mortgage payments, it can often amount to significant costs over time and affect how much mortgage you can afford . Understanding how your mortgage interest rate is calculated is a crucial step in securing a home loan. Here's what you need to know about mortgage interest, how it is calculated and how it might impact your finances. Eligible for a mortgage? Check your options at LendingTree Will the Fed's rate hike affect mortgage rates? The Federal Open Market Committee sets the short-term interest rate - the federal fund rate - that banks use to borrow money. The federal fund rate doesn't directly affect long-term rates such as mortgages, but the two tend to move in the same direction . A day after the Fed's most recent rate hike, mortgage rates increased to 5.78% for a 30-year fixed-rate mortgage and 4.81% for 15 years. Freddie Mac said the 30-year rate jump marked "the … [Read more...] about Everything you need to know about mortgage interest rates, including how much you’ll pay

Doctors branded ‘delusional’ for 30pc pay rise demand
After rail workers and barristers took to the picket lines in an effort to prevent their pay from falling far behind inflation, doctors are preparing industrial action of their own. At the British Medical Association’s annual conference, doctors said a real-terms pay cut in the last 12 years means they have effectively lost millions of pounds. GPs have also voted in favour of industrial action over a new contract that forces practices to open on Saturdays, expressing solidarity with rail unions by urging fellow medics to “channel our inner Mick Lynch” in protest at the new terms. But rather than seeking a pay rise slightly higher than the 3pc public sector cap sought by the Government, in exceptional cases — or even in line with the 11pc figure that inflation is expected to hit in October — the BMA is preparing to call for a 30pc increase over the next five years, one of the biggest demands in the history of industrial relations. “Calls for pay rises of up to 30pc are … [Read more...] about Doctors branded ‘delusional’ for 30pc pay rise demand
Brothers’ argument for failing to pay $510,000 ‘not tethered to reality’
Two Napier hotel developers have been told to pay a $510,000 debt after Appeal Court judges found their argument “not tethered to reality”. Brothers Malcolm and Anthony Herbert, their lawyer Stephen Lunn and two of their trusts appealed a High Court decision that ordered them to pay more than $500,000 in relation to a planned Hilton hotel development that turned sour . Hotelier company USAR Napier Ltd, an arm of the Sarin Family’s hotel investment company, had intended to open a Hilton DoubleTree hotel in the former PWC building on the corner of Munroe and Raffles streets. A lease agreement between Sarin and the Herberts’ Thackeray Trust was signed prior to 2020, as the building was being converted into a hotel. Cost of living: ‘Biggest tax cut in a decade’ takes effect to help 30 million people
The amount you can earn before having to pay national insurance (NI) has been raised from today, a move Boris Johnson has described as the "biggest tax cut in a decade" to help with the rising cost of living. The government says 30 million people will benefit to the tune of £6bn collectively from the shift in the threshold, which has risen from £9,880 to £12,570. It would save a typical worker £330 over 12 months and take 2.2 million people out of paying NI contributions altogether. The PM told his cabinet on Tuesday - just hours before the shock resignations of Sajid Javid and chancellor Rishi Sunak - that the measure was part of a £37bn package of support the government had put in place to help families face down the rising tide of everyday expenses from fuel and food to household energy. NHS staff off work with long Covid set to be stripped of full pay
NHS staff off work with long Covid will be stripped of full pay, the Government is expected to announce. In March 2020, temporary measures were put in place to give NHS staff 12 months full pay if they were off with the condition. But from next week, the health service will return to pre-pandemic arrangements, meaning workers will receive six months full pay followed by six months half. The Telegraph understands that the changes will not affect staff off work and isolating with Covid for short periods of time. The change in policy, first reported by The Independent, comes as Covid infections increased by almost 30 per cent in the past week. Responding to the changes to sick pay, reportedly to begin from July 7, Patricia Marquis, the director of the Royal College of Nursing England, said: “This decision is hugely disappointing given that Covid-19 clearly hasn’t gone away and nursing staff continue to be disproportionately affected by the virus as they face higher risk of … [Read more...] about NHS staff off work with long Covid set to be stripped of full pay
Birmingham Airport chief executive gets 49% pay rise
By Simon Gilbert Published 24 June Share close Share page Copy link About sharing The chief executive of Birmingham Airport's pay has risen by 49% pay rise, it has emerged, angering trade unions. Nick Barton's annual wage increased from £399,000 to £595,000 last year. It came after large-scale job cuts in the sector in the wake of the pandemic. Jane Nellist, president of Coventry Trade Union Council, said the pay was "absolutely disgraceful" but airport board member John McNicholas said it was "paying the appropriate rate". Staff shortages, among security staff in particular, have caused major issues for travellers at Birmingham Airport which received £12.8m of public money from the government to support it during the Covid pandemic. It also laid off 43% of its staff during the period, when the business was forced to virtually shut down. It has been seeking to fill gaps … [Read more...] about Birmingham Airport chief executive gets 49% pay rise
Families on low incomes suffering ‘year of financial fear’ – charity
Families on low incomes are enduring a “year of financial fear” and making grim choices such as falling behind on bills, going without essentials or taking on expensive debt, a report has found. The Joseph Rowntree Foundation (JRF) said the cost-of-living crisis and a decade of social security cuts and underfunding are taking a heavy toll. It used a survey of about 4,000 people on low household incomes in May and June (the bottom 40%, which equates to an income of under £25,000 for a couple with no children), for the report. Rather than making the trade-off between heating or eating, one in five (21%) low income households were unable to do either – going without enough food as well as being unable to keep their homes warm, researchers found. Six in 10 (60%) had gone without essentials since the start of 2022, or, had cut down on or skipped meals, or gone hungry in the previous 30 days. Bernie Ecclestone claims he offered to pay Lewis Hamilton’s wages and stands by “fair” Putin
Former F1 supremo Bernie Ecclestone has accused Lewis Hamilton of having a short memory in the wake of his controversial comments about the seven-time world champion and Russian despot Vladimir Putin. Ecclestone sparked outrage last week when he defended former F1 driver Nelson Piquet, who, it emerged, used racial and homophobic slurs when talking about Hamilton in an interview last year. The 91-year-old also declared he would “take a bullet” for Putin, despite his invasion of neighbouring Ukraine , which has seen thousands of innocent civilians killed or displaced. In response, Hamilton described Ecclestone as an “older voice” who no longer represented the sport.
