In the end hoisting Hull City clear of trouble proved beyond even Marco Silva. The Portuguese had arguably performed a minor miracle in stretching his team’s top-flight aspirations into the penultimate weekend given the mess he had inherited, with players sold in January and a state of inertia gripping the boardroom. Yet, in succumbing emphatically here the worst was confirmed. While a wave of relief swept from south London to south Wales, there was only numbed disappointment back on Humberside. The Championship awaits. This performance perhaps summed up the issues even Silva could not resolve. Their away record remains the worst in the division and never threatened to improve here. Hull hogged the ball and probed constantly as Crystal Palace, needing only to draw, sat deep and heaved to contain every cut and thrust. Yet there was no bite, no composure in the final third and no reward. Chasing the contest from 133 seconds in, and always vulnerable at set plays, they were … [Read more...] about Hull City relegated from Premier League after thrashing at Crystal Palace
MANCHESTER City could still avoid a Champions League ban - despite suffering a major legal defeat. City’s attempt to have Uefa’s Financial Fair Play case against the club thrown out was dismissed by the Court of Arbitration for Sport. The Etihad outfit went to Cas in June in a bid to get a ruling that Uefa’s Club Financial Control Board had acted illegally. The Control Board’s investigatory unit, headed by former Belgian Prime Minister Yves Leterme, is understood to have recommended City face a European ban. But before the case was considered by the five judges who sit on the Board’s Adjudicatory Chamber, City attempted to have the case ruled out of order. City challenged Uefa’s right to ask for the Judges to pass sentence, claiming there was no case to answer and questioning the legitimacy and haste of the investigation. Now that argument has been shot down - but it does NOT mean the Judges will follow the recommendation. In a statement issued in … [Read more...] about Man City lose appeal to block Uefa’s probe into Financial Fair Play case – but may still avoid Champions League ban
MANCHESTER CITY’S Champions League fate lies in the hands of five Uefa judges after they failed to get their Financial Fair Play case thrown out yesterday. It is a dispute that confuses most fans so, here, MARTIN LIPTON explains all... WHAT ARE THE ALLEGATIONS? Uefa investigated claims that City had hidden millions in funding by the club’s Abu Dhabi owners under the guise of legitimate sponsorship income. The probe was launched following the Football Leaks document dump of City emails and letters. It is understood Uefa determined City were guilty of “cynical” attempts to deceive their financial chiefs. City — owned by billionaire Sheikh Mansour — have attacked the publication of “illegally hacked and out of context emails” and vehemently protest their innocence.WHAT HAPPENED YESTERDAY? City had asked the Court of Arbitration for Sport to throw out the Uefa complaint. They claimed there was no case to answer and questioned the legitimacy … [Read more...] about Man City could face Champions League ban after losing appeal to block Uefa’s FFP probe – but what does it all mean?
For Coventry City there is finally scope for blue-sky thinking after sealing an immediate return to League One with a convincing play-off final win against Exeter City. For more than 37,000 baying Coventry supporters who made Wembley appear lopsided, the victory not only reversed an alarming slide but brought a first promotion for 51 years in arguably their biggest game since the 1987 FA Cup final. Fine second-half goals by Jordan Willis, Jordan Shipley and Jack Grimmer were enough for Coventry’s unpopular owner, Joy Seppala, the chief executive of the hedge fund Sisu, to nudge her sunglasses on to her forehead so she could properly witness the sea of sky blue – enhanced by smoke bombs – below. The roar from those fans at full-time was even more telling. “That reconnection between the players and the supporters is fundamental to building anything,” Mark Robins, the Coventry manager, said. “Coventry City supporters deserve the best and we have to … [Read more...] about Jordan Willis sends Coventry City into play-off final rapture against Exeter City
