Muckamore inquiry: Lack of care at hospital ‘led to arm amputation’
By Catherine Morrison Published 12 hours ago Share close Share page Copy link About sharing The brother of a former Muckamore Abbey hospital patient has told the inquiry he believes his brother's arm had to be amputated due to a lack of care from staff. Stephen lived at Muckamore on and off from December 1988 to October 2013. His brother, Ian, appeared before the public inquiry into what happened at the hospital. Stephen is now 53 and has Down's syndrome and various different needs. He requires 24-hour care. When Stephen entered Muckamore initially, Ian said he was placed in a locked ward. "It was like a prison," Ian said. "There were a lot of violent patients. It was not appropriate for Stephen's needs, he never should have been put there." Stephen was bitten twice by other patients and his brother told the inquiry the incidents were not investigated … [Read more...] about Muckamore inquiry: Lack of care at hospital ‘led to arm amputation’
NHS doctor, 81, who lied about his age killed patient in bungled biopsy
A doctor who killed a woman during a hospital procedure, three years after he left another patient permanently disabled doing the same test, has been jailed. Dr Isyaka Mamman, 85, had pleaded guilty to gross negligence manslaughter over the death of Shahida Parveen, 48, in 2018 at the Royal Oldham Hospital. The doctor, then aged 81, carried out a ‘highly dangerous procedure’ on the married mum of three instead of using a conventional technique, even as her husband ‘begged’ him to stop and she ‘screamed’ in pain. Dr Mamman, of Cumberland Drive, Royton, near Oldham, had already been suspended once by medical watchdogs for lying about his age before the fatal appointment. He was also responsible for a series of bungled appointments which led to complaints from patients. Jailing him for three years at Manchester Crown Court, Mrs Justice Yip said the death was his main responsibility but the hospital trust should have done more after Dr Mamman had lied about his age and … [Read more...] about NHS doctor, 81, who lied about his age killed patient in bungled biopsy

ADHD drugs bring ‘significant improvements’ for Alzheimer’s patients
Drugs to boost mental ability in people with Alzheimer’s disease may have been hiding in plain sight after scientists found that medication for Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) brings significant improvements to thinking. Researchers from Imperial College said there was “good evidence” that ADHD medicines such as atomoxetine and guanfacine may also treat Alzheimer’s , and have called for large clinical trials. The drugs work by boosting levels of a neurotransmitter called noradrenaline, which is crucial for mental processes such as attention, learning, memory, readiness for action and the suppression of inappropriate behaviours. Disruption of the system producing noradrenaline happens early in Alzheimer’s, leading researchers to believe that drugs targeting the problem could help. Although small trials have been carried out in the past, they never involved enough patients to be sure. To get around the small numbers, Imperial pooled an analysis of 10 small … [Read more...] about ADHD drugs bring ‘significant improvements’ for Alzheimer’s patients

Scientists chase £4m prize for innovations to help dementia patients
Cutting-edge technology to help dementia patients speak forgotten words or keep them living in their homes for longer is being sought with the launch of a £4 million innovation prize fund. Alzheimer’s Society, Innovate UK and the Medical Research Council will on Wednesday night announce the Longitude Prize on Dementia to encourage inventors to come up with new ways to help people cope with the neurodegenerative disease . Organisers said projects might involve Netflix-like platforms which could make recommendations about what to buy at the shops, or people or places to visit. Or facial recognition technology could learn non-verbal communication of dementia patients so that it could offer up the right word, or contact a loved one . The prize will award £3.1 million in seed funding and grants to the most promising innovators, with a £1 million prize awarded to the winner in early 2026. Kate Lee, chief executive officer of the Alzheimer’s Society said: “We know that there are … [Read more...] about Scientists chase £4m prize for innovations to help dementia patients
Cancer patients and diabetics in Mariupol ‘dying from medicine shortage’
Russian forces are cutting off the supply of life-saving drugs into the already battered city of Mariupol, officials have said. Mayor Vadym Boychenko said in a Telegram post yesterday that people ‘are at risk and cannot wait for the occupiers to deliver medicines’. The Mariupol City Council said locals in the southern port city are dying from a ‘shortage of drugs for cancer patients, people with diabetes , tuberculosis and problems with the thyroid gland’. It comes after Vladimir Putin’s forces subjected the city to a brutal Medieval-style siege for two months, which saw food, water and other vital supplies cut off. Relentless bombardment of infrastructure meant civilians routinely suffered internet blackouts, making them even more isolated from the outside world. Earlier in the invasion, Russia was accused of violating ceasefire agreements allowing safe exit routes for residents by shelling so-called humanitarian corridors. Putin’s forces declared victory … [Read more...] about Cancer patients and diabetics in Mariupol ‘dying from medicine shortage’
