Germany and Nigeria are set to sign an agreement in Berlin Friday paving the way for the return of centuries-old sculptures known as the Benin Bronzes that were taken from Africa in the 19th century and displayed in German museums and elsewhere. Governments and museums in Europe and North America have increasingly sought to resolve ownership disputes over objects that were looted during colonial times. A British colonial expedition stole the bas-relief Bronzes along with a vast number of other treasures in 1897 from the royal palace of the Kingdom of Benin, in what’s now southern Nigeria. The Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation, an authority that oversees many of Berlin’s museums, announced last year that it was beginning formal negotiations on returning pieces that are in its collection. Many of them date from the 16th to the 18th centuries. The memorandum of understanding will be signed by German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock and Culture Minister … [Read more...] about Germany, Nigeria to sign accord on return of Benin Bronzes

Companies covering abortion travel costs for employees could face privacy hurdles
After the U.S. Supreme Court revoked the federal right to an abortion that's been in place for half a century, companies like Amazon, Disney, Apple and JP Morgan pledged to cover travel costs for employees who live in states where the procedure is now illegal so they can terminate pregnancies. But the companies gave scant or no details on how they will do this and it's not clear if they will be able to — legally — while protecting employees' privacy and keeping them safe from prosecution. "Most employers were not prepared for Roe to be overturned, and even those that were didn't realize the law would literally be changed the next minute," said Brian Kropp, a vice president at the consulting firm Gartner. "They're trying to play catch-up." Kropp said many companies announced plans to offer travel benefits without the infrastructure in place to make them work. Some, he added, are creating supplementary policies that employees can buy to cover abortion travel, while others … [Read more...] about Companies covering abortion travel costs for employees could face privacy hurdles

100 Women: Can we wire our brains for confidence?
Published 4 October 2017 Share close Share page Copy link About sharing Dr Stacie Grossman Bloom is a neuroscientist who has three daughters. She also has a successful career at NYU Langone Medical Center in New York. She has examined the role that neuroscience can play in boosting confidence. This is particularly useful to many women who need exactly that, she writes as part of this year's 100 Women Challenge . Confidence is something that many women want, but don't know how to get. Yet, we need to embrace our abilities and our value and have self-esteem to be successful. Without it, we are less likely to seek promotion, speak up in meetings, and rise into leadership positions. This ultimately has an enormous impact, as study after study shows that having women at work in positions of power correlates with profitability, more collaborative environments, and improved problem solving. … [Read more...] about 100 Women: Can we wire our brains for confidence?
Inflation never far away as PM Jacinda Ardern heads to Sydney to sell New Zealand
Jacinda Ardern continues her tour of Australia, promoting tourism and trade today. Australia’s Treasurer warns that inflation will get worse before it gets better. PM pushes back against suggestions the country should move to ‘red’ traffic light setting. As Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern prepares to fly to Sydney on Wednesday, the Reserve Bank of Australia delivered a reminder of the Covid-induced cost of living crunch back in New Zealand, lifting Australia’s official cash rate target by half a basis point to 1.35% . Ardern said on Monday that she expected the scourge of inflation to be widely discussed on this trip. Australian Treasurer Jim Chalmers greeted the news of rate rises with a warning: don’t expect things to improve quickly. “While the trajectory of rising interest rates was set before the election, this rate rise is another blow to workers and families already under significant cost of living pressure,” Chalmers said. Australia’s inflation grew by … [Read more...] about Inflation never far away as PM Jacinda Ardern heads to Sydney to sell New Zealand

The Prime Minister's joint chiefs of staff Nick Timothy and Fiona Hill have resigned after Theresa May lost her majority in the General Election. The pair have been in the firing line after the PM's gamble of calling a snap election backfired, with disgruntled Conservatives highly critical of the role of Mr Timothy and Ms Hill played in the campaign. Former Tory MP Gavin Barwell will replace the duo as Mrs May's new Downing Street chief of staff. The ex-housing minister served in the Government until losing his Croydon Central seat on Thursday night. Zimbabwe to sell solid gold coins after local currency collapses
Zimbabwe will begin selling gold coins to the public in an attempt to rid the crisis-wracked country of triple-digit inflation after a collapse in the local currency. The "Mosi-oa-tunya" coins, which are named after the Victoria Falls, will act as an alternative store of value and can be converted into cash and traded as officials attempt to shore up the crumbling Zimbabwean dollar. The country is desperately trying to battle the crisis caused by inflation hitting almost 200pc in June and a slump in the local currency. The Zimbabwean dollar has shed more than two-thirds of its value against the US dollar this year. The deteriorating situation in the African country has echoes of the economic collapse and hyperinflation suffered during ex-dictator Robert Mugabe’s reign . It has one of the highest inflation rates in the world. The gold coins will be available for sale from July 25 and their cost will be based on international gold prices and the cost of production. They will … [Read more...] about Zimbabwe to sell solid gold coins after local currency collapses

Psychiatry and the War
by BRIG. GEN. WILLIAM C. MENNINGER, USA MILITARY psychiatry differs from civilian psychiatry in that the Army must be totally responsible for a man — not only for his food and clothing, but especially for his ability to participate in his particular mission. Consequently, when a man did not fulfill his function, the Army had to find the cause and, if possible, remedy it. In many instances the cause lay in his personality and in his emotional difficulties. Since there is a human tendency to retreat into illness under stress, it was not surprising to find that many men became ill when they were unable to meet the demands of the new life. Military psychiatry differs also in quality from civilian psychiatry. In the Army much more effort and time are invested in a preventive psychiatryan attempt to keep men healthy and to seek out causes for poor morale. Until comparatively recently, the majority of civilian psychiatric patients had to be brought to the psychiatrist by relatives, … [Read more...] about Psychiatry and the War
