HEAVY rain brought travel chaos today as Stansted Airport cancelled flights and the M2 was closed amid a yellow warning for torrential downpours. The south of England has borne the brunt of the bad weather today as photos and videos from Kent show how the busy motorway turned into "a river" and parts of Gravesend were submerged. Swathes of standing water brought traffic to a standstill and all lanes were closed between junctions 5 and 4 for Stockbury and Gillingham while officials battled to clear the flooding. At Stansted Airport — the scene of major disruption over the Bank Holiday weekend — air traffic control restrictions were being brought in due to the heavy rain leading to travel chaos. At least six flights were cancelled between 4pm and 6pm while further delays were expected as the airport warned passengers to check with their airline before setting off. Flights at Stansted Airport are getting back to normal after more than 100 arrivals and departures were cancelled on Good Friday. An electrical fault started a fire on a shuttle bus parked outside the terminal at around 4.20pm. It took the emergency services 20 minutes to bring the blaze under control. No-one was hurt, but thick black smoke spread across the airport. Brad Miller, Stansted’s chief operating officer, told BBC Breakfast: “The wind direction meant the smoke was blowing into and across the terminal. A Delta flight caught fire shortly after landing at an airport in Atlanta, the airline has confirmed. The plane was on its way to Quito, Ecuador, but suffered a mechanical problem shortly after take-off from Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport and was forced to return. The Federal Aviation Authority said the brakes locked up upon landing. Footage from a passenger on another flight showed the plane’s landing gear on fire. What are our rights? EU regulation 261/2004 establishes rules on compensation for passengers in the event of denied boarding, flight cancellations or delayed flights. It applies to all members of the EU and the airlines that reside within them. Any passenger of any age and nationality whose flight departed from an airport which resides in the European Union or was en-route to an EU member state while travelling with an airline operated in the EU is covered by these rules.
