Follow today's live court action R yan Giggs's ex-girlfriend has revealed that she lied to the former footballer about having cancerous cells detected in a smear test so that she "would not have to have sex with him". In late October 2020, just days before an alleged headbutt at the centre of the trial, Kate Greville, 36, told a friend she was going to end her contraception in secret. When Mr Giggs became suspicious that something was afoot, the PR executive told him: "I had a smear test…And I had cancerous cells, I have to go to hospital on Thursday." The ex-footballer responded in shock, and asked her what exactly the test had shown, to which she responded "high-grade dyskaryosis". Chris Daw QC, for the defence, said that the pair continued to have "regular and enthusiastic sex" aftwerwards, and referring to the contraceptive coil that Ms Greville was getting removed without letting her then boyfriend know, "Your plan was to get pregnant by Mr Giggs, wasn’t it? "No, … [Read more...] about Kate Greville lied to Ryan Giggs about having cancerous cells, court hears

Kate Greville realised she was being ‘lured’ into relationship after reading psychology book
R yan Giggs' ex-girlfriend said she realised she was being "lured" into an affair with him after reading a psychology book, a court has heard. The ex-Wales manager is accused of assaulting Kate Greville, 36, and subjecting her to controlling and coercive behaviour from August 2017 to November 2020. Ms Greville told jurors at Manchester Crown Court that she had read How to Win Friends and Influence People for work purposes, and the ex-footballer's actions "mind games" reminded her of it. The defence told Manchester Crown Court the suggestion Mr Giggs lured Ms Greville into a relationship with psychological tricks was "rubbish". During her research of coercion, Ms Greville - who said she was "really into psychology" - determined that Mr Giggs had "narcissistic personality disorder" after a Google search. Two lost phones The court also heard how Ms Greville had lost two phones after police requested to review them for evidence. One fell out of her pocket when she was trying … [Read more...] about Kate Greville realised she was being ‘lured’ into relationship after reading psychology book
Culture snobs used to sniff at television – now they’re glued to it
I am not much of a fan of people who say, with that familiar hint of snobbery, “I never watch television”. Nor am I sure that I always believe them. But for several years when I was juggling work and young children I did struggle to find the time to fit telly into my routine. And although I was aware that I was missing out, I would smugly console myself with the fact that I was, at least, reading, and could opine on Dickens and Dostoevsky when asked (which I never was). When one did slump in front of the gogglebox, it was always with a sense of guilt. And when the prodigious Christmas telly binge came round, that sense of indulging a vice was worse than ever. Shouldn’t one be taking in all those bracing, frosty walks the National Trust liked to harp on about? No longer. In this golden age of television drama, not only is it unacceptable to be snobby about watching telly, it is no longer necessary to feel guilty either. The showy pile of books by the bed has been replaced … [Read more...] about Culture snobs used to sniff at television – now they’re glued to it

More info Liz Truss has hit out at Rishi Sunak’s plans to tackle the cost-of-living crisis during ITV’s leadership debate. The Foreign Secretary added: "We need to do better we need to take on Whitehall." She said: “Rishi, you have raised taxes to the highest level in 70 years. That is not going to drive economic growth. You raised national insurance even though people like me opposed it in Cabinet at the time, because we could have afforded to fund the NHS through general taxation. “The fact is that raising taxes at this moment will choke off economic growth, it will prevent us getting the revenue we need to pay off the debt.” Trending … [Read more...] about Tory leadership LIVE: Rishi fuming as Truss goes straight for him ‘Taxes will choke us!’
Some of Afghanistan’s teenage girls manage to keep learning, but none see a bright future under the Taliban
Kabul — In the Taliban's Afghanistan , defiance looks like girls sitting down with pencils and paper, to keep learning. Since the extremist group's decree barring girls between the ages of 12 and 17 from most government-run schools a year ago, a growing number have enrolled themselves in unofficial schools scattered across the country. CBS News correspondent Imitaz Tyab visited one, founded by Doctor Zainab Mohammadi. She funds it entirely out of her own pocket, which she admits is difficult, but she told CBS News she feels it's her "responsibility," and she has no intention of stopping. "Children die here every day": Taliban's Afghanistan is starving Although the Taliban formally forbid the education of teenage girls, Mohammadi says the country's rulers largely turn a blind eye to unofficial schools like hers — as long as strict rules are followed. The girls have to dress fully-covered in black, and men cannot come to the school. For now, adhering to those … [Read more...] about Some of Afghanistan’s teenage girls manage to keep learning, but none see a bright future under the Taliban
Photo timeline reveals monkeypox patient’s symptoms changing day-by-day
PHOTOS from a man who had an agonising monkeypox rash show how the symptoms change day-by-day. Silver Steele was covered in agonising blisters around his mouth that took around 20 days to worsen before getting better. He still fears that what he initially thought was “razor burn” will now scarr his skin for life. Silver Steele, the patient's professional name as a porn actor, bravely used social media to share the picture to spread awareness. Although monkeypox can infect anybody, it has almost exclusively been spreading in men who have sex with men since outbreaks started globally in the spring. It is spreading via sexual activity, from close skin-to-skin contact and potentially via semen, but is not considered an STI . The drastic plans Donald Trump is already promising for a second term as president
ANALYSIS: For the first time since leaving office, former US president Donald Trump has started getting specific about what he would do if he wins a second term in the White House. The pitches he's made onstage over the past month in speeches from Washington, DC, to Dallas to Las Vegas are a stark contrast from ordinary stump speeches. He promises a break from American history if elected, with a federal government stacked with loyalists and unleashed to harm his perceived enemies. There has never been a potential candidate like Trump : a defeated former president whose followers attacked the Capitol, who still insists he never lost, and who openly pledges revenge on those he views as having wronged him. As his 2016 campaign and administration showed time and again, from the border wall to the Muslim ban, he and his aides worked furiously to translate rally slogans into official policy - whether or not there were legal or political barriers to overcome. And if Trump does … [Read more...] about The drastic plans Donald Trump is already promising for a second term as president

More info Speaking about transport secretary Grant Shapps ’ announcement of his 16-point plan, which includes the right for Government to enact emergency powers to prevent strikes if it could result in a national emergency, Mr Ferrari said the UK has “all the laws we need” to prevent excessive protesting, implying that this was a step too far. He warned the UK should “be aware, be very aware” as the proposals look to have a crippling effect on future protests and strikes. Sunshine Bridge lane closed after inspectors find ‘significant crack’ in support system
State highway crews closed a westbound lane of the Sunshine Bridge and will keep certain heavy loads off the span until repairs are made to a "significant crack." The Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development found the crack during a routine inspection of the bridge that carries La. 70 between Donaldsonville and Sorrento. The bridge was closed for seven weeks in 2018 after being struck by a crane. "The bridge is safe for the traveling public to cross," the highway department said. "The lane closure is in place out of an abundance of caution until the repairs can be made. No permitted loads (trucks that need a permit from DOTD) will be able to use the bridge until the repairs are in place." The agency said crews will monitor the crack; if the bridge becomes unsafe, it will be shut down. A repair schedule had not been set as of Thursday, DOTD said. Once materials are delivered, repairs would likely be done quickly, it said. “This is a perfect example of why we … [Read more...] about Sunshine Bridge lane closed after inspectors find ‘significant crack’ in support system
A-level results down on past two years but still higher than before Covid
A-level grades in the UK are lower than the past two years but still remain higher than pre-pandemic levels. Hundreds of thousands of pupils across England, Wales and Northern Ireland nervously collected their results today , one week ahead of GCSE students. It was the first time they’d sat exams since the Covid pandemic, and they expected to face tough competition to get into university this year. Around 40% of students were expected to use the clearing system – used by universities and colleges to fill remaining courses when applicants don’t secure their first choice. The Universities and College Admissions Service (UCAS) chief executive Clare Marchant warned today will not be ‘pain-free’ for all and that offer-making has been ‘more conservative’ this year. Grades were expected to drop back from 2020 and 2021 levels – when pupils were assessed by their teachers. This year’s grade aim to reflect a midway point between last year’s record surge in high grades … [Read more...] about A-level results down on past two years but still higher than before Covid
