They will once again joined by Steve Jordan on the drums, following the sad death of Stones drummer Charlie Watts last year. While the excitement builds for the absolutely massive gigs, details on support acts have been kept tightly under wraps – until now. The Stones will be supported by iconic acts including Phoebe Bridgers and Sam Fender as they take over London for two weekends this summer. Abba legend Benny Andersson doesn’t find Eurovision fun anymore – but was impressed by the UK’s Sam Ryder

May 26, 2022 by metro.co.uk

Abba legend Benny Anderson, 75, on being an avatar, why he tries not to see Eurovision and why he needs a beard trimmer. Hi Benny, we are talking two days before the premiere of Abba’s London live residency featuring avatars of the band. How are you feeling? I feel good. I do. I haven’t worried much about my part of the work, which is to see that it is good musically. The million-dollar question is whether the audience will connect to what’s going on up there. It takes them about two minutes before there is a bond between ‘us’ on stage and the band and the audience. Then they go, ‘OK, this is the real thing.’ You’ve had big opening nights for shows such as Chess and Mamma Mia! Does this feel like the highest stakes yet? It is higher stakes. This is a huge thing. We have been working for five-and-a-half years. The people at Industrial Light & Magic, who have created the digital versions of us, have really done a fantastic job. I’m looking at myself and We spent five … [Read more...] about Abba legend Benny Andersson doesn’t find Eurovision fun anymore – but was impressed by the UK’s Sam Ryder

Tory windfall tax row widens as two more Cabinet ministers reject the policy

May 21, 2022 by www.telegraph.co.uk

Cabinet ministers have lined up to warn Rishi Sunak off plans for a windfall tax on energy firms , insisting the move would damage the economy and have unintended consequences. In a highly unusual display of public dissent, Brandon Lewis, the Northern Ireland Secretary, and Sajid Javid, the Health Secretary, became the fifth and sixth Cabinet members to speak out against the policy in the space of a week. The Chancellor has refused to rule out the idea of a one-off windfall tax on North Sea giants, which is being pushed by Labour and has support from some Tory backbenchers - although others fear it would be unconservative. Mr Sunak is attracted to the idea of a windfall tax that would offer firms different rates based on how much money they are prepared to invest in new energy infrastructure in Britain, The Sunday Times reported late on Saturday. Kwasi Kwarteng, the Business Secretary, last week described a windfall tax as “taxing investment in jobs”, while Liz Truss, Suella … [Read more...] about Tory windfall tax row widens as two more Cabinet ministers reject the policy

Windfall tax ‘damaging’ for net zero plans and energy security, businesses say

May 26, 2022 by news.sky.com

The windfall tax announced by the chancellor will be "damaging" for the UK's net zero plans and energy security, the Confederation of British Industry (CBI) has said. Rain Newton-Smith, CBI chief economist, said the tax "sends the wrong signal to the whole sector at the wrong time", pointing to a "backdrop of rising business taxation". Chancellor Rishi Sunak said oil and gas firms will pay a 25% levy on profits , which will be phased out when energy prices return to normal - but companies will get 90% in tax relief for any profits they invest. The funding will be used to help families with soaring energy bills. Cost of living latest: Martin Lewis responds to Rishi Sunak announcement Oil and gas companies are being targeted because they have enjoyed bumper profits as a result of soaring energy prices. Danny Dyer ‘quits as host of BBC’s The Wall’ as show’s future thrown into doubt

May 26, 2022 by metro.co.uk

Danny Dyer has reportedly quit as host of BBC’s Saturday night quiz show, The Wall, after four series. The game show, which started in 2019, has been hosted by EastEnders star Danny for the past few years, with Angela Rippon acting as the question master. Each episode sees one pair take on The Wall in three rounds that test their general knowledge and trust in each other, in the hope of winning large sums of money. But it seems like presenter Danny, 44, has had enough of the challenge and will be walking away from the hit series. When asked by The Sun if he’d be returning to The Wall, he told the publication: ‘No.’ Despite his apparent exit, it seems the broadcaster is open to getting a new host onboard, and encouraged fans to watch old episodes on BBC iPlayer. The BBC told Metro.co.uk : ‘Whilst The Wall is off the air, fans can stream their favourite episodes on iPlayer. ‘Plus there are plenty of other great quiz and game shows currently airing on … [Read more...] about Danny Dyer ‘quits as host of BBC’s The Wall’ as show’s future thrown into doubt

Boris Johnson urged by three more Tory MPs to step down over Sue Gray’s partygate report

May 26, 2022 by news.sky.com

Three more Tory MPs have withdrawn their support for Boris Johnson in the wake of Sue Gray's report into Downing Street lockdown parties. The announcements by John Baron, David Simmonds and Stephen Hammond follow a similar call by their backbench colleague Julian Sturdy on Wednesday. Senior Tory Mr Hammond said the findings by senior civil servant Ms Gray were "damning for the prime minister, the civil service, and were criticial of the activities and culture that existed in Number 10" during COVID. He added: "All I can do as a backbencher is speak out and submit a letter." Mr Baron said the conclusions by Ms Gray, as well as the Met Police investigation into the episode, "paint a shameful pattern of misbehaviour during the pandemic as the rest of us kept to the COVID regulations".
