Fleur de Lis, the seller of square pizzas and among Baton Rouge's oldest restaurants, announced it was closing over the Fourth of July weekend — and it's not clear when or if it's going to re-open. That news has caused shock and a wave of nostalgia for many loyal customers and fans of their Round the World Pizza (anchovy, Italian sausage, mushroom, pepperoni, salami, onions — no free substitutions). And, for some, it shows how Baton Rouge and its restaurant scene are evolving. Fleur de Lis' website says it "will be closed July 4th - July 12th for vacation" — something it has been known to do in the past. But its Facebook page says "We will be closed until further notice, due to the shortage of staff. Thank you so much to my few loyal staff and all my loyal customers." Fleur de Lis' owners could not be reached for comment. The restaurant's voice mail says: "We’re going to be closed indefinitely at this point due to staffing issues. We are going to really miss all of our … [Read more...] about Is Fleur de Lis closing for good? And what does that say about Baton Rouge’s restaurant scene?

Exclusive extract from Amber Gill’s debut novel, Until I Met You
Until I Met You is Amber Gill’s first novel for romantic publishers Mills & Boon . It follows Samantha on what was supposed to be the holiday of a lifetime with the imminent launch of her travel blog, her best friend’s wedding and – hopefully – her own marriage proposal. Until she finds herself on her way to Tobago – single. Read on for an exclusive peek at the opening of the novel. ‘Ladies and gentlemen, this is the pre-boarding announcement for flight BA209 to Miami, Florida. At this time we ask passenger Samantha Roberts to proceed to the British Airways check-in desk. Passenger Samantha Roberts, please proceed to the check-in desk.’ The insistent monotone roused Samantha from her meditation. She hopped to her feet, grabbed the handle of her carry-on suitcase and made a beeline for the desk. Tall, curvy, with cinnamon brown skin and a head of wild corkscrew curls, she stood out in most crowds. But the Heathrow departure gate was packed. She had to elbow … [Read more...] about Exclusive extract from Amber Gill’s debut novel, Until I Met You
Federal judge whose son was killed in ambush: “My son’s death cannot be in vain”
[This story originally aired on February 20.] In July 2020, Daniel Anderl, the son of federal Judge Esther Salas and attorney Mark Anderl, was shot dead by a gunman at the front door of the family's New Jersey home. Daniel Anderl, 20, took a bullet to his chest trying to protect his parents. By the time Judge Salas came to the door, the killer was gone. Her husband, Mark, was wounded. "I have direct evidence that he died heroically, that he had a holy death," says David Oakley, Daniel Anderl's godfather and a family friend. The stranger who came to Judge Salas' door had been holding a package, posing as a deliveryman. Just eight days earlier, a chillingly similar incident took place in California. When attorney Marc Angelucci came to his door to sign for a package, he was also shot dead. "He was just a down-to-earth, at the center of his soul a good-hearted person," Marc's friend, Cassie Jaye, tells CBS News correspondent Tracy Smith. "[Sighs] I was trying to make … [Read more...] about Federal judge whose son was killed in ambush: “My son’s death cannot be in vain”

Five teens guilty of killing dad ‘because he looked like one of Ant and Dec’
Five teenagers have been convicted of killing a much-loved dad who was battered to death in a senseless and savage attack sparked by banter over his resemblance to Ant McPartlin . Danny Humble, 35, shared a joke with them as he and his partner made their way home from a meal and drinks in Cramlington, Northumberland, after lockdown rules were relaxed in May last year. But Newcastle Crown Court heard the atmosphere suddenly changed when the teens, then aged 16 to 18, surrounded him near an underpass and repeatedly punched and kicked him to the floor. Ex-soldier Alistair Dickson, 18, of Blyth, Northumberland, was found guilty of murder after jurors heard he stamped on Mr Humble’s head during the onslaught. The jury cleared his co-defendants of murder but found them guilty of manslaughter. They were 18-year-olds Ethan Scott, of Blyth; Kyros Robinson, from Seaton Delaval; Bailey Wilson, of Blyth; and a 17-year-old who cannot be identified by the media due to his age. … [Read more...] about Five teens guilty of killing dad ‘because he looked like one of Ant and Dec’
Maybe Ridding the World of Superheroes Isn’t Such a Bad Idea
By far the most arresting character in Thor: Love and Thunder , the twenty-bajillionth Marvel movie, is the splendidly named villain Gorr the God Butcher. Bald, covered in scars, and draped in monklike robes, Gorr (played by Christian Bale) is a vengeful wraith who wields a mystical blade and has only one goal in mind: killing gods. Any deity he can get his hands on, no matter the faith or civilization they belong to. Gorr’s philosophy is that these immortal beings have grown complacent, doing nothing to help their followers and instead basking in their faded glory. His solution is simple: total annihilation. He may well have the right idea. Within the Marvel Cinematic Universe, gods are merely another brand of hero, superhumans imbued with ancient powers for unknown reasons. Thor may be a real Norse deity, but he’s also a caped, lantern-jawed hunk played by Chris Hemsworth who counts Captain America and the Hulk among his best pals. Love and Thunder is Thor’s fourth solo movie, … [Read more...] about Maybe Ridding the World of Superheroes Isn’t Such a Bad Idea

North West proves to be total style queen as she joins mum Kim Kardashian for Paris Fashion Week
Kim Kardashian proved that she is passing on her fashion knowledge to eldest daughter North West as they jetted to France. The Kardashians star, 41, was spotted with the nine-year-old – who she shares with estranged husband Kanye West – on the streets of Paris in time for the Haute Couture shows, causing a stir as they made their way around the city. There was no ignoring the mom-of-four as she stepped out in very bright neon green trousers which covered her heels, coupled with a camo print T-shirt. She clutched a sparkly silver bag for the getaway, completing the look with black sunglasses. North was every inch the fashionista that her famous parents had raised her to be, rocking an oversized blue bomber jacket and dark trousers, paired with dreamy chunky boots. The youngster accessorized simply with blue sunnies and a small black bag. Kim is no stranger to taking her children along on a work trip, but it hasn’t always worked out in the past.
