Hacking group targets Vietnam activists: Amnesty

Global human rights watchdog Amnesty International said on Wednesday that Ocean Lotus, a group with ties to the Vietnamese government, has been involved in hacking attacks targeting activists and an NGO. The accusations highlight how authorities could resort to unlawful digital surveillance to keep tabs on activists and government critics . Who was targeted? The suspected attacks took place between 2018 and November 2020. They targeted two prominent Vietnamese human rights defenders, one of whom lives in Germany, and a Vietnamese NGO based in the Philippines, Amnesty said. Blogger and pro-democracy activist Bui Thanh Hieu was targeted with spyware at least four times between February 2018 and December 2019, it revealed. He left Vietnam and has lived in Germany since 2013. It said another blogger based in Vietnam, who was not named due to fears for their safety, was targeted three times last year. COVID-19: Overall deaths in England were almost 30% higher last month than five-year average for January

Last month had the highest January mortality rate in England since 2002, according to new data. There were 1,462.0 deaths per 100,000 people, compared with the January 2002 figure of 1,581.7, and the 1,424.5 in January 2003. The number of deaths in England was nearly 30% higher last month than the five-year average, with coronavirus reported as the leading cause. There were 68,796 deaths registered in England last month, which was 15,685 more than the January average between 2015 and 2019 - a total 29.5% rise. That's a total of 904 deaths higher than the five-year average. SCHOOLS won't have to enforce face masks or carry out regular testing on pupils, it was revealed today. Speaking to Good Morning Britain this morning, education minister Nick Gibb said twice-weekly testing will not be compulsory for pupils to go to school in England but remains “highly recommended”. With pupils returning to schools in March 8, Gibb confirmed a "no test, no school" policy is not in place but said he hopes the majority of students will volunteer to test themselves at home twice a week before coming in to school. "No, they’re not compulsory but we highly recommend it, it’s everybody doing everything we can to identify asymptomatic cases of Covid , helping to reduce the transmission," he said. "The first three tests will be taken in the school that will show the students how to do it most effectively and it’s the students themselves that will do it at home with supervision by their parents," he added. BEST Exotic Marigold Hotel star Ronald Pickup has died aged 80 after a long illness, his agent said today. The actor died surrounded by his wife and family. His agent said the actor tragically passed away on Wednesday, saying: "Ronald Pickup actor aged 80 passed away peacefully yesterday after a long illness surrounded by his wife and family. "He will be deeply missed." Pickup had a varied career across theatre, film and television. His first major part came in 1964 when he starred in Doctor Who episode The Tyrant Of France as a physician. Pickup told the PA news agency in 2012 that his favourite role was when he played writer George Orwell in Crystal Spirit: Orwell On Jura, which told the story of him writing his acclaimed novel 1984. He also starred in films The Mission and Prince Of Persia: The Sands Of Time. The actor remained active into later life and continued to star in big name productions.
