Ukraine war: Zaporizhzhia ‘blackmail’, Hungary imports more gas, Ukraine anthem played to Russians
Bombing of Ukraine nuclear plant continues as more accusations fly Kyiv and Moscow once again accused one another of firing on the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power station on Sunday. Ukraine's nuclear agency Energoatom claimed there had been "new provocations" over the weekend, with alleged Russian shells hitting the plant with intervals of 3 to 5 seconds. Russian-backed authorities in occupied areas around Zaporizhzhia claimed Ukrainian forces were behind the shelling, which damaged a pump and caused a fire to break out at the plant. Euronews cannot independently verify these claims. Russia seized the plant -- which is the largest in Europe -- early on into the war, and has since been accused by Ukraine of using it as a military base. It has been shelled multiple times in recent weeks, raising fears of a nuclear disaster and leading the UN to call an urgent meeting last week. In his daily address, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy denounced what he called … [Read more...] about Ukraine war: Zaporizhzhia ‘blackmail’, Hungary imports more gas, Ukraine anthem played to Russians

IOC attacks ‘Government-triggered’ Wimbledon ban on Russian players
The president of the International Olympic Committee has publicly attacked the Government-triggered ban on Daniil Medvedev and other Russian and Belarusian players competing at Wimbledon . Despite the IOC executive board on which he sits having recommended all athletes from those countries be blocked from taking part in international competitions following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, Thomas Bach hit out over how the decision to prevent them playing at this summer’s Championships was reached. The All England Club banned the likes of Medvedev from this year’s tournament after ministers threatened to force them to sign declarations denouncing the invasion in order to play, putting their safety and that of their loved ones at risk. Addressing the general assembly of the Association of Summer Olympic International Federations in Lausanne, Bach said: “We need the respect of the governments for our role. “Look at our friends from tennis: in Paris, Russian players can play as … [Read more...] about IOC attacks ‘Government-triggered’ Wimbledon ban on Russian players
Russian soldiers ‘didn’t know we were invading Ukraine until we crossed the border’
A Russian paratrooper has revealed in a new memoir that his fellow soldiers had no idea they were invading Ukraine until they were already deployed on the battlefield. Pavel Filatiev, 33, a former elite soldier who later quit on medical grounds, details how his unit was amongst the first to be stationed by the Ukrainian border in the days prior to the invasion. Armed with nothing but a rusty machine gun and an ill-fitting uniform, Filatiev claims he had no idea he was being sent to invade Ukraine until he was awoken by the sound of gunfire in the back of an army truck crossing the border at 2am. Filatiev asked: ‘Are we firing at advancing Ukrainians? ‘Where we were going and why wasn’t clear. It was clear that a real war had begun. I found out [we had] orders to go to Kherson.’ In a series of devastating extracts published by Meduza, Filatiev outlines the major failings at the heart of Vladimir Putin’s military machine and reveals how poor equipment, low morale … [Read more...] about Russian soldiers ‘didn’t know we were invading Ukraine until we crossed the border’
Russian daily COVID count surpasses 120,000 due to Omicron onslaught
The daily count of new COVID-19 infections in Russia spiked above 120,000 on Sunday as the highly contagious Omicron variant races through the vast country. The state coronavirus task force reported 121,288 new infections over the past 24 hours — an all-time high and 8,000 more than a day earlier and an eightfold increase compared with the beginning of the month when daily case counts were about 15,000. The task force said 668 people died of COVID-19 in the past day, bringing Russia’s total fatality count for the pandemic to 330,728 — the deadliest toll in Europe. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters on Friday that “it is obvious that this number is higher and possibly much higher,” because “many people don’t get tested” or have no symptoms. The Kremlin spokesman also admitted that a lot of people in the presidential administration have gotten infected with the virus. "The vast majority continue to work from home after having isolated themselves," Peskov … [Read more...] about Russian daily COVID count surpasses 120,000 due to Omicron onslaught
