Review ordered into ‘appalling case’ of Ruth Williams who was killed by husband in first lockdown

· March 7, 2021 ·

A review into the "appalling case" of a woman who was killed by her husband during the UK's first lockdown has been ordered by the home secretary. Priti Patel was "not satisfied" with Torfaen council's decision not to carry out a domestic homicide review (DHR) into the circumstances surrounding the death of Ruth Williams, according to safeguarding minister Victoria Atkins. The 67-year-old was strangled to death by Anthony Williams, 70, at their home in Cwmbran, South Wales, on 28 March last year. He was sentenced to five years in prison. He was cleared of murder, having already pleaded guilty to manslaughter by diminished responsibility. Australia abruptly stops travel bubble with New Zealand as Auckland is plunged into a snap three-day lockdown due to three new Covid cases

· February 14, 2021 ·

Australia has abruptly stopped the green zone travel bubble with New Zealand as Auckland begins a three-day lockdown. The 'green zone' bubble between the two countries will include new restrictions from Monday, after Auckland was moved to an Alert Level Three Covid-19 lockdown. The 72-hour lockdown comes after three people from one family tested positive for Covid-19, with the source of the infections still unknown. An urgent meeting to discuss the three-day lockdown was convened by Australia's Chief Medical Officer Professor Paul Kelly with Chief Health Officers from New South Wales, Queensland and Victoria on Sunday night. It has been announced that all flights originating in New Zealand will be classified as 'red zone' flights for an initial 72 hours from 12.01am on February 15, in a statement from the office of the Chief Medical Officer. 'As a result of this, all people arriving on such flights originating within this three-day period will need to go into 14 days … [Read more...] about Australia abruptly stops travel bubble with New Zealand as Auckland is plunged into a snap three-day lockdown due to three new Covid cases

COVID cases continue to fall in all four regions of the U.S. as the seven-day average in the Midwest drops to a QUARTER of its peak and hospitalizations decrease nationwide – despite country recording its deadliest day on Thursday

· February 6, 2021 ·

Cases of COVID-19 are continuing to drop across the United States with all four regions reporting a decline in new daily infections. In the Midwest, the seven-day average for new daily cases per capita has now dropped to a quarter of what it was during the region’s peak in late November. It now stands at 231 news cases a day per million people; compared to 328 in the West, 394 in the Northeast, and 490 in the South. Nationwide, there were 131,146 new cases reported on Friday and 86,373 Americans were hospitalized with the virus. This was the second day in a row that the number hospitalized remained below 90,000, according to data from the COVID Tracking Project. This was the first time it had dropped below this threshold since late November. According to the Tracking Project, there were 3,543 new fatalities from coronavirus in the U.S. reported on Friday.  It came after America recorded its deadliest day of the pandemic yet on Thursday, with a staggering 5,077 fatalities in … [Read more...] about COVID cases continue to fall in all four regions of the U.S. as the seven-day average in the Midwest drops to a QUARTER of its peak and hospitalizations decrease nationwide – despite country recording its deadliest day on Thursday

Back in the pub garden by Easter! PM’s new ‘roadmap’ will scrap 10pm curfew and substantial meal requirements as Boris says he’s ‘optimistic’ about downward trend in Covid

· February 13, 2021 ·

Lockdown misery is set to end by Easter, with people finally free to drink in beer gardens and dine outside restaurants again. Under Boris Johnson ’s ‘roadmap’ for a steady return to normality, No 10 plans to allow the beleaguered hospitality industry to lift its shutters, most likely on Tuesday March 30 or the following day. In a break from earlier pre-lockdown rules, the 10pm curfew and the requirement to have a substantial meal with alcohol will be abandoned. The news comes as the Prime Minister prepares to celebrate meeting his target of vaccinating the 15 million most vulnerable people in the UK by tomorrow. In his most upbeat assessment for weeks, Mr Johnson yesterday said: ‘I won’t hide it from you. I’m optimistic, but we have to be cautious.’ If the downward trend for infections, hospitalisations and deaths continues, primary and secondary school pupils will return to classrooms on March 8. On the same day, picnics will be permitted within households and if one … [Read more...] about Back in the pub garden by Easter! Australia CANCELS New Zealand travel bubble after Kiwis reveal traveller with highly-infectious South African Covid strain visited 31 places

· January 25, 2021 ·

Australia has suspended its travel bubble with New Zealand after authorities there revealed a woman tested positive to the highly-infectious South African Covid strain she is believed to have contracted in hotel quarantine. As Australian notched up its eighth consecutive day without a Covid infection, authorities announced they are suspending arrivals from New Zealand for 72 hours and strengthening airport health screenings after the country's first infection in months. Health minister Greg Hunt said the decision to suspend the green zone travel bubble was done so out of 'an abundance of caution'. Those scheduled to arrive in the next 72 hours will be put in hotel quarantine, Mr Hunt said, with passengers told to reconsider their need to travel. Australia has now gone eight days without a locally acquired case of coronavirus as the country continues to successfully manage the virus (pictured, Sydney's Bondi Beach) Australia has suspended its green zone … [Read more...] about Australia CANCELS New Zealand travel bubble after Kiwis reveal traveller with highly-infectious South African Covid strain visited 31 places
