Germany will house a new global data hub to detect emerging pandemic threats, the World Health Organization announced on Wednesday. The WHO Hub for Pandemic and Epidemic Intelligence will start operating in Berlin in September. The center will quickly analyze data to predict, prevent, detect, prepare for, and respond to risks worldwide, it said. It should also boost cooperation between countries and scientific institutes. The hub should be able to detect pandemic signals earlier than current systems. "The COVID-19 pandemic has exposed gaps in the global systems for pandemic and epidemic intelligence," WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus told journalists. " There will be more viruses that will emerge with the potential for sparking epidemics or pandemics," he said. "Viruses move fast. But data can move even faster. With the right information, countries and communities can stay one step ahead of an emerging risk and save lives." FEELING the sneeze? The Met Office predicts high tree-pollen levels this week as the weather improves. That means hell for hay fever sufferers, not least because the cost of medication adds up. As it is Allergy Awareness Week, I asked hay fever expert Dr Beverley Adams- Groom and Lloyds Pharmacy’s Anshu Kaura for some advice. These are their tips and I some of my own . . . PLAN AHEAD: Dr Beverley says: “Use pollen calendars to find out which types kids may be affected by. Then you can pre-treat the expected allergy, starting two weeks in advance with medication. They then may get very few symptoms.” My tip: Head to metoffice.gov.uk to see the free pollen calendar. SUNNIES OUTLOOK: Anshu explains: “If you get itchy eyes, wear sunglasses on days with high pollen counts. Those with a wrap-around effect are best.” My tip: Treat yourself to designer sunglasses from TK Maxx. They now have up to 60 per cent off the RRP. WASH INDOORS: “Giving your child a … [Read more...] about Conquer your hay fever with these tips and deals as the pollen count rises
BORIS Johnson is to announce a 10pm closing time for pubs tomorrow, The Sun can reveal, as scientists increased the nation's alert level to FOUR. As part of a package of measures to be unveiled to tackle soaring Covid cases, the Prime Minister will slap a curfew on the hospitality industry and enforce patrols to make sure venues are obeying the "rule of six". And pubs, bars and restaurants could be shut completely in virus hotspots. The measures, which were outlined to devolved leaders today, will be kept under review. The curfew is different to the one currently in place in Wales - where they face an 11pm shutdown - but is significantly less severe than a possible two week complete shut-down which was mooted by SAGE scientists just last week. It's not yet clear when the new rules will come in, or how long they will last for. But Dr Bharat Pankhania, an epidemiologist from the University of Exeter, slammed the 10pm curfew as ineffective. Asked if he believed the … [Read more...] about UK lockdown: Pubs to close at 10pm across England as covid alert level RISES to 4
Drifting asleep in the front seat of her car, influencer Asha Grand had already blacked out by the time she slammed full-speed into a vehicle parked on the side of the road. The shocking near-death experience, captured on CCTV, came after the American YouTuber had taken Apetemin, an unlicensed medicine used by thousands of young girls desperate to get Kim Kardashian-style curves. Dangerously promoted as a means to gain weight rapidly, the product - which is illegal to sell in the UK - has seen users report terrifying side effects, ranging from severe fatigue to jaundice and even liver failure. Now, NHS leaders have urged Instagram to clamp down on accounts advertising Apetemin following a BBC documentary that revealed it is being widely flogged on social media and in shops. One woman tells the show she has been hospitalised twice after using it, before admitting: "I took it again and I collapsed down the stairs at home. Apetamin is the devil." With girls as young as 12 … [Read more...] about ‘We nearly died taking illegal ‘Slim Thick’ drug to look like Kim Kardashian – with terrifying side effects’
When Joe Biden boasted to world leaders last month that the US would halve its greenhouse emissions by 2030 from 2005 levels — urging his counterparts from countries like China and India to commit to stronger action — the US president left environmentalists unconvinced. The cuts are more ambitious than previous targets to burn less fossil fuel. But they will not stop the US from overshooting its fair share of the emissions that can be released to meet the 2015 Paris Agreement pledge to keep warming well below 2 degrees Celsius, and ideally 1.5C, according to independent research project Climate Action Tracker. This is a question of justice: The US has polluted the atmosphere more than any other economy on the planet and also has more money to deal with it. Factoring in those inequalities, Biden's pledge is "very close to or just within" the range of cuts needed to reach 2C, said Andreas Geiges, a researcher at Climate Analytics, which jointly runs the project. But it falls … [Read more...] about Climate justice: Do pledges ignore unequal emissions?
