In 1957, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. delivered a speech in Montgomery, Alabama, in which he declared, "Life's most persistent and urgent question is: 'What are you doing for others?'" In that spirit, since 1983, the third Monday in January has been set aside as Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. It serves as a time of reflection and a call to action. In the mid-90s, the slogan "A Day On, Not a Day Off" was promoted to push the importance of service on MLK Day, which falls this year on the civil rights icon's 89th birthday. This year, dozens of nonprofit organizations will commemorate the civil rights leader through service opportunities and free admission to national parks and parades. H&M caused outrage this week over one of its advert for a children's hoodie. That's because it used a black child to model the green jumper with the slogan "Coolest monkey in the jungle". The public bombarded the high street chain with comments branding the controversial advert "racist" and "unacceptable" with the retailer forced to apologise. But while most people seemingly took to social media to voice their disgust, one angry man wanted to take things a little further. Getting a friend to film his protest - he walked into an H&M store, believed to be in New York, in just a pair of red shorts, a backpack and a mask. He then starts running around the shop, mimicking the sounds and actions of a gorilla. The black man then starts knocking clothes off the rails which go tumbling to the floor. They were visiting British Army units on exercise in Germany to see how their equipment was being used. It was cold and drizzly and we were knee-deep in mud in a vast training area. I approached a group of soldiers of the Royal Scots who were having a brew beside their Warrior armoured vehicle with their SA80 rifles slung over their shoulders. At that time SA80, with a reputation for jamming, was loathed by the infantry. These squaddies were wary, irritable and exercise-weary. The last thing they wanted was a chat with some Sassenach officer and a bunch of civvies.
