Bank of Ireland to permanently close 103 branches with at least 200 jobs at risk

· March 1, 2021 ·

Bank of Ireland is to permanently close 103 branches as millions more customers turn to digital banking. The bank is to shut 88 outlets in the Republic, reducing its network from 257 to 169, while in Northern Ireland the network will be reduced by 15 from 28 to 13. It follows a deal with An Post to offer customers access to banking services at more than 900 locations. Bank of Ireland said the majority of the branches that are closing are self-service locations which do not offer a counter service. The closures come after Ulster Bank's parent company, NatWest, last month announced that it was withdrawing Ulster Bank from the Irish market. Bank of Ireland group chief executive Francesca McDonagh said: "Technology is evolving and customers are using branches less, year on year on year. "Covid-19 has accelerated this changing behaviour and we've seen a seismic shift towards digital banking over the past 12 months." McDonagh said Bank of Ireland has reached a "tipping point" … [Read more...] about Bank of Ireland to permanently close 103 branches with at least 200 jobs at risk

Bosses share the five words that could ruin your chances in a job interview

· March 1, 2021 ·

Job interviews can feel like an out of body experience where you find yourself saying phrases you would never usually dream of uttering out loud. Everything can be going swimmingly until you inexplicably spill out that you are "intensely passionate about Excel", leaving you cringing all the way home. And if it's not getting overly excited about spreadsheets, many of us are guilty of overusing buzzwords such as 'dedicated', 'motivated' and 'team player' that hiring companies have heard over and over from job hopefuls. Two managers with plenty of experience on the grilling side of the interview table have now told Seek the five words they don't want to hear from candidates. Jason Walker, director at Hays, and Ian Scott, manager at Randstad Technologies, shared the phrases you should be avoiding. Obviously Aside from sending in your CV, an interview is usually the company's first chance to meet you and learn more about your skills - so don't assume anything is 'obvious'. … [Read more...] about Bosses share the five words that could ruin your chances in a job interview

Full list of all 164 TSB branches is set to close – putting 848 jobs at risk

· September 30, 2020 ·

TSB has said 164 branches are at risk of closure in the next 12 months - with 848 employees expected to enter consultation as a result. Chief executive Debbie Crosbie said the cuts come as a "significant" number of customers are now banking digitally. "Closing any of our branches is never an easy decision, but our customers are banking differently – with a marked shift to digital banking," she said. "We are reshaping our business to transform the customer experience and set us up for the future. This means having the right balance between branches on the high street and our digital platforms, enabling us to offer the very best experience for our personal and business customers across the UK. Union Unite said staff were informed of "significant employee reductions " in an announcement earlier this week. It said today marks a "dark day" for colleagues who have worked tirelessly during the pandemic. In the past 10 years, TSB has cut its network from 631 branches to just … [Read more...] about Full list of all 164 TSB branches is set to close – putting 848 jobs at risk

High street footfall picked up sharply last week, apparently spurred by the announcement of the roadmap out of lockdown as well as sunny weather. COVID-19: Halfords to pay back furlough cash as cycling sales surge

· March 1, 2021 ·

Halfords has announced it will pay back £10.7m in furlough scheme cash to the government after enjoying better than expected sales at the start of this year. The cycling and car parts business said trading remained "volatile" and hard to predict as lockdowns continued but told investors it now expects full-year profits could nearly double. The Treasury has spent tens of billions of pounds supporting the wages of workers temporarily laid off due to the coronavirus crisis, though retailers that have been allowed to remain open during lockdowns have come under pressure to give money back. Where jobs have been lost across the UK economy Halfords has benefited from a boom in demand for cycling products as people are forced to stay at home but the restrictions have weighed on its car business. In its latest update the retailer said it "continued to experience a volatile trading environment" in the seven weeks to 19 February but that overall sales had been … [Read more...] about COVID-19: Halfords to pay back furlough cash as cycling sales surge
