‘Game changer’ map reveals precious UK landmarks most at risk from climate change

· March 5, 2021 ·

A "game changer" climate map has been drawn up by the National Trust, showing the threat extreme heat, humidity and landslides will have on its most precious British properties and landscapes. The map is based on a "worst-case scenario" of a failure to drive down carbon emissions over the coming decades, but is intended to be a flagging tool to highlight potential hazards surrounding a heritage or countryside site. It has been drawn up to help the charity intervene to protect its sites, outlining the effect posed by climate impacts including rising heat and humidity, landslides, high winds, and floods, and how they could change by 2060. And the number of sites at high or medium risk of climate-related hazards could increase from 20,457 (30% of … [Read more...] about ‘Game changer’ map reveals precious UK landmarks most at risk from climate change

· March 5, 2021 ·

Philip Jansen, the chief executive of BT Group, gave boardroom colleagues an ultimatum over his own future that led to the departure this week of the company's chairman, Jan du Plessis. Sky News has learnt that Mr Jansen told fellow directors of the telecoms giant over a period of several months that he had become frustrated with the speed at which BT was taking key strategic decisions. The BT chief, who joined in 2019, indicated that he was prepared to resign unless Mr du Plessis was replaced by a chairman who could accelerate the pace of change at the former state monopoly, according to several people close to the company. Mr du Plessis, one of the most experienced chairmen in corporate Britain, said on Monday that he would leave once a successor was identified. Secret tunnel dating back hundreds of years found by workmen moving garden pole

· March 4, 2021 ·

A secret tunnel unused for hundreds of years was stumbled upon by workmen. A Western Power Distribution team were on a job in Tintern, Monmouthshire moving an overhead power line. When they started digging up a footpath which ran parallel to a fast flowing stream they realised something unusual was underfoot, Wales Online reported. They dug down and realised it was a four foot-high man-made passage. "Before work began we'd done all the usual checks and nothing had shown up on any of our drawings or records to indicate there was anything unusual about the site," said technician Allyn Gore. "But shortly after the excavation began, the digging team made the extraordinary discovery of what they initially thought to be a cave." He added: "Work stopped immediately and we were called in to decide what course of action we should take next.
