Find Peter Chadwick: Manhunt continues for fugitive multimillionaire years after being charged with wife’s murder
Produced by Chuck Stevenson and Gayane Keshishyan Mendez A murder that stunned an upscale California neighborhood more than six years ago is now the focus of an international manhunt — and authorities are asking the public for help. "We had no idea this was going to become the logistical monster that it has," U.S. Marshal Craig McCluskey tells "48 Hours." Peter Chadwick and his wife, Q.C. Chadwick, seemed to have the perfect life. College sweethearts, they were married for 21 years and had three sons. They lived in a gated community in Newport Beach, California. That dream life collapsed one day in 2012 when neither of the Chadwicks turned up to pick up their sons from the bus stop. Investigators had little idea that day the case would lead to an international manhunt. The next morning, authorities got a 911 call in San Diego, the next county over. It was Peter Chadwick, claiming a house painter named Juan murdered Q.C. and forced him to put her body in his SUV and drive down … [Read more...] about Find Peter Chadwick: Manhunt continues for fugitive multimillionaire years after being charged with wife’s murder

Woman loses half a finger after manicure ‘treat’ goes horribly wrong
A woman had her finger amputated after contracting a potentially lethal infection during a manicure. Jose Jackson, 57, was warned she could lose her arm if she did not have surgery. The gran of two was accidentally jabbed in the cuticle – the area of clear skin where the bottom of the nail meets the finger – while having a set of acrylic nails applied at a salon. Her finger swelled up and went purple, then began weeping pus. The damage was so bad that doctors had no choice but to remove half her finger. An inspection at the salon found their tools had not been cleaned properly between customers. Jose, from Carmarthen, south-west Wales, later sued and won a five-figure settlement. She is telling her story to highlight the importance of cleanliness in nail bars. The pub manager told the Daily Star Sunday: “I wanted to treat myself so I felt nice, but it ended up ruining my life and costing me a finger. “The infection had eaten away at my finger and my bone. “The … [Read more...] about Woman loses half a finger after manicure ‘treat’ goes horribly wrong

Wanted: A National Science Policy
LLOYD V. BERKNER THE shadow of the Russian satellite is surprisingly large and persistent for so small an object.” So commented Henry Smythe at the meeting of the American Nuclear Society last October. The truth is that the Soviet satellites have shocked Americans into an awareness of the phenomenal rise of Soviet science during the last thirty years. We are chagrined to have lost the lead that American science, we believe, should have maintained. Western science unquestionably still holds a dominant position in most areas, but the rate of Soviet scientific growth assures its inevitable rise to pre-eminence in the next few years unless the defects of our present policy are recognized and corrected. Already Soviet scientists have achieved or are projecting an imposing list of “firsts” among the tools of science: the largest proton accelerator, the most intense neutron source, the largest optical and radio telescopes, imposing programs of meteorological and oceanographic research, as … [Read more...] about Wanted: A National Science Policy
