UK campsites devastated as thousands to remain closed until May 17 due to shared toilet rules

· February 26, 2021 ·

UK campsites with shared facilities have been left off the list when it comes to reopening, after the government announced some holidays can resume from April 12. However, this is only for self-catered accommodation , where there are no shared facilities - meaning campsites that have shower and toilet blocks are not included. Instead, they will reopen from May 17 , along with hotels, meaning many are missing out on the end of the Easter holidays. Martin Smith, founder of Campsites.co.uk , said they have seen a booking boom of 300 per cent following the announcement, but that they were being unfairly penalised due to the shared toilet and shower facilities. He warned: "Under the current roadmap, pubs and shops can open their toilet facilities for customers from April 12, but campsites must keep theirs closed until May 17. "This matters, because it stops thousands of campsites opening for the early Bank Holiday weekend, depriving independent sites the chance to claw … [Read more...] about UK campsites devastated as thousands to remain closed until May 17 due to shared toilet rules

Sony to allow PS5 storage upgrades ‘this summer’ after gamers max out memory

· February 26, 2021 ·

SONY is reportedly plotting to hand a lifeline to gamers who've already maxed out the storage on their PlayStation 5s. According to Bloomberg , the Japanese tech titan will open up its new console to internal memory upgrades in the coming months. The PS5's 825GB memory drive leaves players with 667GB of usable space on which to store games and other files – and that fills up pretty fast. Gamers on social media have reported that their drives are maxed out after downloading just a handful of marquee titles. That could all be about to change, according to Bloomberg. The site reported on Friday that a firmware update released by Sony this summer will add support for additional internal drives. That will allow gamers to drastically expand their storage, releasing the bottleneck that stops them from having too many games on the go. The update will also unlock higher cooling-fan speeds to ensure the console doesn’t overheat, people close to the matter said. Unlike … [Read more...] about Sony to allow PS5 storage upgrades ‘this summer’ after gamers max out memory

Benidorm to restart beach ‘squares’ which tourists have to reserve – despite hour long queues last summer

· February 26, 2021 ·

BENIDORM is relaunching their beach "squares" which tourists have to reserve, despite them causing long queues last summer. The scheme was originally launched to allow social distancing at the popular beaches, and is restarting from March 1. Mayor Toni Pérez explained it was an "an extension to the organisation and operation model that we implemented in June 2020 under the ‘Benidorm Beach Safety’ project." While the initial plans will only be in place from March 1 to April 30, due to the busy period with two local holidays, it is likely to be introduced again during the peak season when Brits descend to the beaches. The proposal includes "the subdivision of the sandy areas, with spaces of 16 square metres (4×4 metres) to ensure physical distancing and personal observance of these measures," which is the same as last year's initiative . Sunloungers and umbrella rental services will also be suspended. Mr Pérez said: "The implementation of all these services is one … [Read more...] about Benidorm to restart beach ‘squares’ which tourists have to reserve – despite hour long queues last summer

COVID: Germany in lockdown lethargy

· January 26, 2021 ·

After weeks of snow and subzero temperatures, there is a touch of spring in the air in late February in Berlin. Thousands of people are out on the streets. In busy areas, just a handful wear masks. Although nonessential retailers remain closed and eateries are only open for takeouts, long lines snake outside every coffee shop, artisanal bakery and outdoor food market. It would be easy to forget that Germany has been in lockdown for nearly four months and strict contact limits remain in place. And the lockdown is no longer working: COVID-19 cases have begun to rise again, and experts say Germany is heading into the third wave of the pandemic. The vaccine rollout is going slower than in other countries like the US and the UK, and the spread of virus variants is on the rise, most notably the more contagious B.1.1.7 British mutation. Lockdowns less popular "All the data and surveys so far show that a large majority still follow the rules," Rolf van Dick, professor of social … [Read more...] about COVID: Germany in lockdown lethargy

Brits told ‘don’t wreck this now’ with even one trip or lockdown will be extended

· February 26, 2021 ·

Brits were tonight sent a stark warning not to "wreck" lockdown after "worrying signs" that cases are rising in 20% of areas in England. Jonathan Van-Tam used a Friday night No10 press conference to warn lockdown could be extended if people "relax" too much over a sunny weekend. Speaking after one in five of England's council areas saw a rise in cases, the Deputy Chief Medical Officer said: "Please don’t be tempted to think ‘well, one home visit might be all right now, weather ’s getting better, going to be a nice weekend. "'One small gathering in your house won’t really matter.’ I’m afraid it does. “There are some worry signs that people are relaxing, taking their foot off the brake at exactly the wrong time. “It’s a bit like being 3-0 up in a game and thinking ‘we can’t possibly lose’. But how many times have you seen the other side take it 4-3? “Do not wreck this now. It is too early to relax. Just continue to maintain discipline and hang on just a few more months. … [Read more...] about Brits told ‘don’t wreck this now’ with even one trip or lockdown will be extended
