Long-awaited plans to build a new Aldi on the outskirts of Sheffield has set tongues wagging online. The supermarket chain has confirmed that construction work on the Swallownest site will finally begin in winter 2019.The site, which is just off the junction of Swallow Wood Road and Sheffield Road, has been fenced off for a number of months and work to install a junction and crossing island has already been carried out.The move has sparked a lively debate online among Star readers with many taking to Facebook to make their voices heard. Burton Mail readers have hailed the "brilliant" workers on the Burton Bridge - with repair work set for completion a full month ahead of schedule. The major town route has been partially shut since Monday, June 18 to enable crucial work including strengthening, resurfacing and drainage to take place. One lane has been kept open for traffic heading into the town throughout the repairs, which were originally scheduled to last until just before the end of the school holidays in September. However, earlier this week officials from Staffordshire County Council, who are masterminding the works, confirmed the bridge is expected to fully open within days, potentially even one day next week, from Monday, August 6. Cabinet member for highways and transport at the county council, Helen Fisher said the crews had done an "amazing job," and if work continues at its current pace, it could re-open some time next week. Swedish furniture giants Ikea have announced it will open its first city-based branch in Tottenham Court Road from autumn 2018. The retailer’s latest brick and mortar store breaks from its traditional model by putting a focus on its digital offering, allowing for a more fluid way to browse rather than relying solely on wandering the aisles of boxed commerce and perfect showrooms.
