Scots as a whole tend not to see immigration – a prominent issue in the Brexit referendum campaign – as a cause for division and acrimony. Indeed, because of Scotland’s particular demographic circumstances, immigration is far more widely viewed as a necessity. There are problems – regulatory and economic – in running an “open door” immigration policy. But Scotland’s main political parties are agreed on the need to encourage more migration. SANDWICH – For an hour every Tuesday, Beth Martini of Sandwich gets together with friends. Instead of sitting and chatting, they wear aprons and safety glasses, pick up power tools and build birdhouses. Martini is one of the more than eight members of the Bird Crafters class at Open Door Rehabilitation Center in Sandwich. Open Door provides vocational, residential, day and community support and services to adults with developmental and intellectual disabilities in order to promote their independence, growth and quality of life. “I love being with my friends and making new friends,” Martini said. “I love learning how to work with tools. ANGELA Merkel’s 13-year reign of power could be coming to an end as the row over Germany’s “open door” immigration policy intensifies. Merkel, 63, could be toppled in days as her coalition partners, the Christian Social Union (CSU), plan to defy her and start turning away border migrants as soon as today. What exactly are the two sides split on? The Chancellor is currently caught up in a row with her Interior Minister Horst Seehofer, a member of the CSU. Open Door Rehabilitation Center is holding its 26th annual Golf Outing on Friday, June 15, at Bliss Creek Golf Club. Play starts at 12:30 with a shotgun, best ball scramble, and all golfers are invited to participate. The day will feature free drinks, free range tokens and a steak dinner. Contests include a golf ball drop, lowest team score, straightest drive, closest to the pin and a hole-in-one with a grand prize. Sponsorships are still available.
