When you’re autistic, cooking a meal isn’t a straightforward task

May 21, 2022 by metro.co.uk

The day had come – finally, I had received my PIP assessment from the Department For Work and Pensions. This would determine whether, as an autistic person, I would be awarded the disability benefit I had applied for. However, I knew it wouldn’t be straightforward. PIP has been subject to controversy probably since inception and it’s common knowledge that many individuals who apply find themselves fobbed off with spurious excuses, and end up being awarded nothing, despite having sat through the humiliating assessment. This often means that they must go to a tribunal to get the decision overturned. This process can take months – sometimes even more than a year. And so, I wasn’t surprised when my assessment turned out to be a complete misrepresentation of my reality as an autistic person. In the document, the DWP had essentially suggested that I was not ‘autistic enough’ to be given the financial help I needed. In that moment, I felt intense despair at still having to … [Read more...] about When you’re autistic, cooking a meal isn’t a straightforward task

Mum makes £1million on Amazon selling blackout blinds she invented for her daughter

April 25, 2022 by www.mirror.co.uk

A mum who quit her job to raise her daughter full time has spoken about her journey from engineer to businesswoman with a million-pound turnover – all thanks to her little girl. Audrey Buck, 55, from Suffolk once worked as a radio engineer for the BBC and later as a director of a training company before giving it all up to start her own family two decades ago. But while raising her eldest, she stumbled upon a completely “game-changing” business idea . “My middle child was born in 2001 when I was 34,” Audrey told The Mirror, reciting the year she gave up her career. “When little, she struggled to sleep during the day. A friend suggested using a good blackout blind,” she said. Within weeks, Audrey recalls her friends asking her to make similar blinds for their young children ( Image: Audrey Buck) As an experiment, Audrey taped black bin liners to her daughter’s nursery window to completely block the light out. “This worked a treat,” she said. “So I quickly … [Read more...] about Mum makes £1million on Amazon selling blackout blinds she invented for her daughter
