Instead, the 30-year-old mother of three is one of thousands of students who were told this week that their colleges are closing abruptly. "We are hurt, disappointed," she said. "And this isn’t my first time going through this. I went through this with ITT Tech," a for-profit college that closed 130 campuses in 2016. The announcement this week that more than 70 campuses operated by Education Corporation of America are closing — including all its Brightwood College and Virginia College locations — seemed abrupt to the thousands of students who attend. They wondered what credit they will receive for their coursework and whether they will get tuition refunds. But plenty of warning signs showed the schools were on shaky ground. Want to be middle class? Consider a “mid-tech” job
Less than two years ago, Darc Boykin was working at the Uniqlo megastore on Manhattan's Fifth Avenue. "I hated it," he said. Now the 24-year-old Bronx native spends his days developing JavaScript tools for an e-commerce company, tutors students in coding part-time and is close to buying an apartment in the New York area. Boykin's story is particularly striking because he belongs to a group whose job prospects are often seen as going down, not up: College dropouts. Online learning means distance is no longer an obstacle for young farmers looking to complete Green Cert
"If I was at home full-time I would waste a lot of time driving to and from Westport. This way there is no travel involved, and you just need to be committed to attend the class from wherever you are in the world," he says. At one stage, he even completed an exam while on a work trip to the Far East. When he is not working in London, John thoroughly enjoys his time on the farm. Last week he took a few days off to help out with the silage harvesting. "We were just lucky to get it done in the fine weather and start spreading slurry too before the heavy rain came," he says. Claremorris-based Dominic Lowry completed the online Green Cert course at the Westport College of Further Education last year with a view to possibly forming a partnership with his father, Dominic Snr, in time to come. "I am self-employed with my own business and would not have been able to do this course otherwise," says the 31-year-old, who graduated last year.
