We built a Buddhist temple in an Edinburgh family home
By Angie Brown Published 1 day ago Share close Share page Copy link About sharing When plans for a huge Buddhist temple on the outskirts of Edinburgh had to be shelved, monks based in what was once a family home in the city decided to transform it instead. A renovation project at The Dhammapadipa Temple in Slateford saw a double garage converted into a prayer room complete with an 80 stone (500kg) gold-plated Buddha from Thailand. Members of the Thai community that settled in Scotland first established The Dhammapadipa Temple in 2005. Poland's conservative government has been criticised over a new school textbook that appears to disparage in vitro fertilisation (IVF) treatment. Opponents say the country's school curriculum is attempting to indoctrinate children with traditional ideologies. Poland’s governing Law and Justice party (PiS) has close ties to the Roman Catholic church and regularly promotes conservative social policies. Amid strict abortion laws, PiS has also ended a national programme that helped fund fertility treatments for couples. The country's education ministry has dismissed the latest criticism and pointed out that the controversial book in question does not directly refer to IVF. The government has also stressed that Polish teachers remain free to choose which textbooks to use for the next school year. What does the book say? The author of History and the Present says the controversial passage describes modern approaches to sexuality and childbearing. “Increasingly … [Read more...] about New Polish school textbook provokes anger over section on fertility
Why the sale of guns on Facebook in Iraq is so ‘rife’
Facebook users in Iraq are exploiting the platform's lack of Arabic and Kurdish-language moderation policies in order to purchase guns online, according to a report. The study by the Institute of Strategic Dialogue (ISD) has found that the sale of weapons in Iraq is "rife" in Facebook comment sections. Social media giants have long been accused of failing to effectively moderate harmful and dangerous content, particularly in regions such as the Middle East. Meta — the parent company of Facebook — has fewer resources to tackle content in various languages and dialects than in English. The lack of moderation in Arabic and Kurdish has created an open gun market on Facebook in Iraq, said Moustafa Ayad, the ISD Executive Director for Africa, Middle East & Asia. "It was relatively easy to find weapons for sale on comments sections of very large Facebook pages, pages with over 2 million followers," Ayad told Euronews. According to his research, some of the … [Read more...] about Why the sale of guns on Facebook in Iraq is so ‘rife’
