European stock markets struggle to recover

May 25, 2022 by www.thenews.com.pk

LONDON: European stock markets struggled to mount a rebound Wednesday as investors weighed the fallout from surging inflation, higher interest rates, China's economic slowdown and the Ukraine war. After climbing Monday, global equities retreated Tuesday as volatility grips financial markets. A series of weak indicators around the world and downbeat forecasts from big firms have chilled trading floors in recent weeks as the surge in prices begins to drag on consumer confidence, with warnings now swirling of a possible global recession. The tech sector was again in the firing line after Snap, the parent of social media app Snapchat, provided a gloomy economic outlook, sending its shares diving more than 40% on Wall Street Tuesday. Wall Street titans followed Snap down, with Facebook-parent Meta and Google-parent Alphabet tanking. "The feel good factor from earlier in the week has fizzed away but there is still some element of relief washing through the financial markets that … [Read more...] about European stock markets struggle to recover

North Korea fires suspected ICBM and two other missiles

May 25, 2022 by www.stuff.co.nz

South Korea’s government says one of the three weapons North Korea launched on Wednesday was a suspected intercontinental ballistic missile. South Korea’s government says the launches are “a grave provocation” that threaten international peace . It says North Korea will only face international isolation if it continues its provocation. North Korea’s long-range missile program is aimed at obtaining an ability to launch nuclear strikes on the mainland US. South Korea’s military earlier said North Korea fired three ballistic missiles off the North’s east coast, resuming its weapons launches after about two weeks. The launches came after US President Joe Biden wrapped up his trip to Asia, where he reaffirmed the US commitment to defend its allies in the face of the North’s growing nuclear threat. Long Covid will be one of this generation’s disability challenges – Commissioner

May 25, 2022 by www.stuff.co.nz

The ongoing burden of long Covid will be one of this generation’s disability challenges, the Disability Rights Commissioner says. Paula Tesoriero’s comments came as part of a Long Covid Symposium hosted by University of Otago (Wellington), on Wednesday. Research indicates 10%-20% of people with Covid-19 develop long Covid after infection. There does not appear to be a relationship between severity of infection and the likelihood of long Covid. On that measure, up to 200,000 of Aotearoa’s million confirmed Covid-19 cases may experience long Covid: and the true number of infections is likely at least two times higher.
