Swathes of England and Wales are braced for "exceptional" risk from wildfires, as temperatures rise towards an expected 36C peak. During the record-breaking heatwave last month, dozens of blazes broke out around the country, torching homes and fuelling the busiest day for London's fire service since the Second World War, mayor Sadiq Khan said. Where is the fire risk? The Met Office has raised the fire severity index to exceptional - the highest level - for much of southern England, stretching as far west as Abergavenny in Wales, for this weekend. Met Office meteorologist Marco Petagna said the risk is "very high across much of central, southern and eastern England". The Met Office has also issued an amber heat warning in place between Thursday and Sunday. The temperature could surpass by far the threshold for a … [Read more...] about What and where is the ‘exceptional’ fire risk – and does climate change cause wildfires?
Wildfires threaten to sweep across the parts of the country this weekend in an “unprecedented” risk, while the relentless heat fuels concerns for the ill and elderly. Video footage captured the moment police officers smashed a window to rescue a Shih Tzu from a sweltering car. Officers were called to a car park in Nottingham after NET Tram staff noticed him barking for help inside the locked silver hatchback on Monday, when temperatures rose to 33°C. The small black dog can be heard panting heavily as he clambers over the shattered glass and into the arms of the PC who pulled the door open. He was immediately whisked into some nearby shade, where the officers calmed the animal and gave him some water from a bottle. They then blue-lighted the pet to a nearby animal hospital where his temperature was recorded at a dangerously high 39.1°C. PC Jamie Martin thanked staff at NET Nottingham Tram for raising the alarm, saying: ‘Had they not done so, it is unlikely the dog would have survived. ‘Many people think it’s OK to leave their dog in the car on a warm day providing the windows are open. ‘But this incident shows that just … [Read more...] about Police smash window to free dog left in boiling car at tram station

This is the moment an Airbus 320 skims just yards over people’s heads as it comes in to land on Greece’s Skiathos island. Plane spotters were staggered by the close shave with the Wizz Air plane, which barely cleared the perimeter fence. The island’s layout means the runway at Skiathos Alexandros Papadiamantis Airport is very short, so pilots have to make a particularly low approach. For this reason, it’s become a popular spot for thrill-seeking plane spotters hoping to get some close-up pictures. There are warning signs and traffic light in place, so people standing there are doing so at their own risk. Even seasoned visitors were taken aback by this particular landing, which was uploaded to YouTube last week by plane enthusiast GreatFlyer. One person even moves out of the way as the aircraft approaches overhead, while people’s gasps are drowned out by the noise of the engine. Another woman’s cap was blown towards the ocean while onlookers were pushed back by … [Read more...] about Moment Wizz Air plane makes ‘lowest ever landing’ and skims over people’s heads
