An obese Russian retired general has been sent to fight on the frontlines in Eastern Ukraine because Vladimir Putin is running out of senior officers. A senior intelligence source last night told the Daily Star Sunday: “Putin is now scraping the barrel. “Most of his best and battle-hardened senior commanders have been killed or injured fighting in Ukraine so he is resorting to sending second rate officers to the front who don’t last very long. ‘Hunger-buster’ diabetes jab helps obese lose 20% of their weight, trial finds
A “game-changing” diabetes drug helped obese volunteers shed 20% of their body weight in a clinical trial. For the study, 2,500 people in nine countries injected themselves with either tirzepatide or a placebo once a week for 72 weeks. Of those given the highest dose of tirzepatide, 57% lost 20% or more of their body weight . Just 3% of those on the placebo lost as much. First author Dr Ania Jastreboff, of Yale University in the US, said: “We should treat obesity as any chronic disease – with effective, safe approaches which target underlying disease mechanisms. Tirzepatide may do just that.” Tirzepatide combines mimics of two hormones, GLP-1 and GIP, that our guts release naturally after we eat to make us feel satisfied. New obesity-fighting drug which could cut body weight by 20% labelled ‘game-changer’
A new obesity-fighting drug, which could cut body weight by up to 20%, has been labelled a ‘game-changer’ by researchers. More than a third (35%) of people who took a new drug for treating the condition lost more than one-fifth of their total body weight, according to a global study involving UCL researchers. It's hoped the findings could play a major part in helping obese Brits with their weight loss and improve their health. Many also hope it will reduce the impact of diseases in the UK, such as Covid-19, experts suggest. Researchers say it's the first time it is possible to achieve such weight loss through drugs. Previously it was only possible thought possible through weight-loss surgery. The drug - semaglutide - hijacks the body’s appetite regulating system in the brain, leading to reduced hunger and calorie intake. Rachel Batterham, professor of obesity, diabetes and endocrinology who leads the Centre for Obesity Research at UCL and the UCLH Centre for Weight … [Read more...] about New obesity-fighting drug which could cut body weight by 20% labelled ‘game-changer’

Vets left ‘extremely disappointed’ after overweight horses win prizes at Royal Windsor show
Vets have been left "extremely disappointed" after overweight horses won prizes at the Royal Windsor show. The British Equine Veterinary Association (BEVA) said entrants at the May contest winning rosettes despite being too heavy sends out the message that obesity among equines is acceptable and even desirable. The organisation also said more must be done to ensure judges are equipped to determine if a horse is overweigh t, and to understand how this should impact their score. “BEVA was extremely disappointed to see overweight horses taking part in Royal Windsor Horse Show and being highly placed,” a spokesman told Horse & Hound. “A huge amount of effort has been put into educating the equestrian world on the risk to health posed by obesity, and there has been great progress made at a number of shows and classes. However, despite this, some horses continue to be willingly and intentionally kept in obese condition and rosettes continue to be awarded for it." Britain’s ‘fattest man’ who once weighed 55 stone dies of organ failure aged 37
A morbidly obese man once thought to be the most overweight person in Britain has died of organ failure and sepsis at the age of 37. Matthew Crawford weighed 55 stone at his heaviest and hit the headlines in 2018 for taking up the space of four hospital beds and assaulting four nurses. His reinforced bed at King’s Mill Hospital in Sutton-in-Ashfield, Nottinghamshire, reportedly cost the NHS £7,000-a-week to rent for 18 months. Several of Matthew’s friends paid tribute to him online, calling him a ‘great lad’ and referring to his nickname ‘Fatkid’. ‘Rest in peace Matthew Crawford aka Fatkid,’ one wrote. ‘At peace with your dad now mate.’ He was declared medically fit to leave for much of his extended hospital stay but could not be discharged due to a lack of home social care. Matthew was accused of using his benefit payments to order pizzas and Chinese takeaways to his hospital bed, which he denied. He also attracted criticism for posting a picture of himself … [Read more...] about Britain’s ‘fattest man’ who once weighed 55 stone dies of organ failure aged 37

Being fat can work to your advantage if you’re a gamer, study finds
Being fat is actually an advantage when it comes to competing in video game tournaments, according to a new study. Obese people are more prone to impulsive behaviour - such as eating - and the trait boosts performance in esports , say scientists. And gorging on calorie-loaded biscuits and cakes and guzzling fizzy drinks is also good as the energy lift provides an edge over rivals during marathon competitions. The surprising finding has implications for larger people in the office, say scientists and bosses should consider them for computer-based activities . Lead author Dr Petr Parshakova said: "Employers have too little understanding of how to select employees for particular tasks. "We tried to answer the question: Does BMI affect the results of computer skills? This is the first such analysis ever conducted." The findings are based on CS:GO (Counter-Strike: Global Offensive) - a shooter game played by more than a million around the world. The BMI (body mass index) … [Read more...] about Being fat can work to your advantage if you’re a gamer, study finds
