In the manicured grounds of a public library in Chandler, Arizona, Liisa Walimaa is waiting for a robot to take her to Macy’s. For a year Walimaa has been a participant in a closely guarded experiment being run by Waymo, a division of Alphabet (née Google), in this suburb of Phoenix that could change the face of global transportation on a scale unseen since we ditched horses for cars. Automated vehicles offer the promise of fewer road fatalities, cheaper rides and greater mobility for the blind and otherwise disabled. They could also cost millions of jobs, threaten public transport spending and upend insurance. Technology companies may love to talk about “disruption”, but what is happening in Chandler is genuinely worthy of the word. There have been setbacks (there will be more) and progress has been slower than first promised, but Walimaa thinks that in five or 10 years, autonomous vehicles will be as viable an option as taking a bike, calling a regular taxi or … [Read more...] about ‘I’m so done with driving’: is the robot car revolution finally near?
AS IF running a vehicle was not expensive enough, it could get a whole lot more pricey for those filling up with diesel. The government has long been planning a “toxin tax” with plans announced this year to ban all new petrol and diesel cars by 2040 – and diesel drivers were hit hard by the 2017 Budget. The number of diesel cars liable for such charges could be as high as 10 million. Only the newest vehicles would be excluded.Which towns would be affected by the charge? In up to ten of the worst-affected cities, diesel cars, as well as commercial vehicles, could … [Read more...] about What is the UK diesel car ‘toxin tax’, which towns are affected by the policy and what was announced in the Budget 2017 by Philip Hammond?

Five fingerprints belonging to republican terrorist John Downey (pictured outside the Old Bailey in 2014), 67, were found on two parking tickets in the Morris Marina car used in the 1982 Hyde Park bombing There is 'no question whatsoever' that the fingerprints of John Downey, a prime IRA suspect in the 1982 Hyde Park bombing, were on car park tickets linked to the explosion which killed four Royal Household Cavalrymen, an expert has said. Fingerprints belonging to republican terrorist John Downey, 67, were found on two parking tickets in the Morris Marina car that exploded and caused the 'cold-blooded killing' of British soldiers 37 years ago, a High Court in London heard. The Marina had been bought the week before the attack on July 20, 1982 at a car auction in Enfield by a man with an Irish accent who gave false details, according to a court document. Now, fingerprint expert Stephen Hughes has told the court that the quality of the five … [Read more...] about ‘No question whatsoever’ that IRA Hyde Park blast suspect John Downey’s fingerprints are on car park tickets linked to bomb that killed four soldiers, civil trial hears
