Nicola Sturgeon should resign if she is found to have breached the ministerial code, new Scottish Labour leader Anas Sarwar has told Sky News. Speaking to the Sophy Ridge on Sunday programme, Mr Sarwar also acknowledged his party was in "a really bad position" ahead of the Holyrood elections in May and was "not naive about the scale of the challenge" faced. His comments came in his first broadcast interview since becoming leader on Saturday, defeating Monica Lennon with more than 57% of the vote. Mr Sarwar, who was an NHS dentist, is the first ethnic minority leader of a political party in the UK after his grandparents emigrated to Scotland from Pakistan. Ms Sturgeon is currently the subject of an investigation over whether she misled the Scottish Parliament on when she knew about allegations of harassment made against her predecessor Alex Salmond . NICOLA Sturgeon must quit if just half of the claims against her are true, a top Tory has said. The Scottish First Minister’s position will be untenable if accusations by predecessor Alex Salmond are proven, according to Tory MSP Murdo Fraser. He told the BBC: “I’ve been a member of the Scottish Parliament for almost 20 years and this was the most extraordinary event I can recall. “If even half of what he alleged turns out to be true — and we will get to the bottom of this very soon — then Nicola Sturgeon ’s position is untenable and she will have to resign.” Mr Salmond says she misled Parliament and breached the ministerial code over harassment claims against him. He also accused her husband, SNP chief executive Peter Murrell, of a plot to drum up police complaints against him to get him jailed. A huge boost in spending on the UK's COVID-19 vaccine programme will be announced by the chancellor in the Budget on Wednesday. Rishi Sunak will pledge a further £1.65bn for jabs, a cash injection hailed by the Treasury as a "shot in the arm" for the vaccine roll-out. The chancellor will also promise to invest a further £33m in vaccine testing and development to protect against future outbreaks and variants. And there will be another £22m for what the government claims will be a "world-leading study" to test the effectiveness of combinations of different vaccines. Figures published by the National Audit Office show the UK has spent £12 billion on its vaccination campaign so far. Advertisement The bill includes £2.9bn paid for 267 million doses of five different vaccines. The UK is believed to have spent between £24 and £28 per dose on the Moderna jab.
