You may have seen me recently on Good Morning Britain, debating with the irrepressible Johnny Ball about whether the over-70s should have to retake driving tests. I must pin my colours to the mast – I’m keen on repeat driving tests as we get older. A few weeks ago I renewed my driving licence and when I received it I wondered what the DVLA was doing giving me a driving licence when they don’t know if I’m fit to drive? Whether I’m a danger to myself and others? After all, when you’re driving a car you’re in charge of a lethal weapon. Johnny Ball, who’s clearly an exceptional driver, decries the curtailment of driving freedom, be it a curfew or a restriction on journeys beyond a 30-mile radius from home, or a ban on night driving. I’m not in favour of bans but I’m definitely in favour of tests to see if we’re competent in modern driving conditions, new road layouts and modern road signage. In fact I’d welcome a refresher course. Every older driver should be asking … [Read more...] about Dr Miriam Stoppard: ‘Older drivers should face a competence test for everyone’s safety’

A woman found dead in water at a country park in Suffolk has been named by police. The body found at Brandon Country Park on Friday morning has been identified as 35-year-old Egle Vengaliene, of Bury Road in Brandon, Suffolk. A 46-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of murder that afternoon and on Sunday evening Suffolk Police were granted another 24 hours to question him. "My child is not a lab rat." The words are from a 25-year-old woman, Susan, and they're in reference to her three-year-old twin girls. While she speaks to DW, her eyes flicker between them as they begin to meander away — first together, then in different directions — in a large, open park in Bonn, Germany. "It just hasn't been tested enough," Susan insists. "A few months [of testing]? That isn't safe." So no, she says. Her kids are not getting vaccinated against COVID-19. And she isn't, either. Her husband had to, and she didn't like that. At a nearby playground, another mother, who does not want to share her name, feels very differently. "I'd vaccinate them. If it were allowed, or doable, then definitely." Her 12-year-old daughter, she says, has had two different kids in her classroom get COVID-19. That led to a two-week quarantine — each time. "That's where you realize it affects them too." At some point in the coming weeks, the European Medicines Agency is expected to … [Read more...] about COVID: How many parents will actually vaccinate their kids?
GOOD Morning Britain’s Laura Tobin has revealed Piers Morgan tried to give her breastfeeding advice after the birth of her premature baby daughter. The meteorologist was taken to hospital at just under 28 weeks pregnant on July 25, 2017, having gone into labour after turning up at ITV’s London studios to do the weather forecast. Her daughter Charlotte, three, was born hours later weighing just 2lb 8oz and spent 83 days in hospital before coming home to Berkshire with Laura, now 39, and husband Dean Brown. In a chat with Fabulous, in partnership with Ickle Pickles charity, the mum-of-one says: “Everyone from GMB was so lovely, sending loads of messages and baby clothes, seeing if we needed anything. “Piers was hilarious when I brought Charlotte home. He’d texted me and said ‘phone me when you get out of hospital’ so I FaceTimed him and showed him Charlotte. “He started going ‘now, something about breastfeeding’. Celia (Walden, Piers’ wife) said ‘you can’t give her … [Read more...] about GMB’s Laura Tobin reveals dad-of-four Piers Morgan tried to give her BREASTFEEDING advice after premature baby’s birth
