The county council is considering borrowing what is understood to be around £5 million to buy the other half of a company it set up, it has been revealed. Pothole filling and repair work on the county’s roads are currently carried out by private company Via East Midlands. Now, the Conservative-run Nottinghamshire County Council plans to buy out the Cornish share. It says the move would be ‘great news’ for the county, but opposition councillors have criticised the proposal. Councillor Kay Cutts is the leader of the council, and represents the Radcliffe on Trent ward for the Conservatives. The leader of Nottinghamshire County Council has spoken out about plans for a 'super council' which she says could save taxpayers £30 million a year. Conservative Councillor Kay Cutts, who represents the Radcliffe on Trent ward, says the new scheme will remove duplication and make council services simpler. However opponents of the scheme, including the leaders of several district councils, have said it would erode local decision making and could end up costing more. Councillor Cutts’ comments come in an opinion column due to be published this week in several of the county’s newspapers. She said: “The county council is developing a business case for replacing the current two-tier system of local government in Nottinghamshire with one new council, responsible for providing all services. “Under current arrangements, your local district or borough council provides services such as council housing, bin collections and leisure, adding up to £83m (nine … [Read more...] about County council leader says ‘super council ‘could save £30m a year
