People have labelled the planned closures of Stockton’s M&S store a “nail in the coffin” for the town’s high street. Angry posters have taken to the Teesside Gazette Facebook page to voice their dismay at the retailer’s plans to axe the Stockton and Darlington stores - saying the elderly and those without cars would be affected most. Here’s six comments from readers about the story: • One poster blamed the shoppers themselves, saying: “I wonder how many people complaining about the shops shutting on Stockton High Street actually use them. “You can’t blame the council if you’re not prepared to support businesses on the High Street, there is only so much they can do. “We need to start a campaign “Save our High Street, The High Street is for everyday not just for Christmas”. • Another wrote: “The demise in Stockton High Street is partly due to out-of-town developments. “Plus the … [Read more...] about ‘High Street is for everyday, not just Christmas’: M&S reaction
Not just for christmas
The Bob Hope Theatre actors’ company presents a traditional pantomime for all the family. The classic rags-to-riches tale of Cinderella has come to the stage at the Bob Hope Theatre, Eltham, with a great script written by Tracy Rogers, adapted by Kirsty Davide and Wayne Morgan-Williams. Featuring hit songs by LA-based composer Stuart Wood, the show is certainly expected to be a big hit. The theatre is owned and run by the members of Eltham Little Theatre Company. Jennifer Sims, Honorary Chair, said: ‘The pantomime is a key event in our year, running for more performances than any other production and always popular with audiences.’ The innate glitziness of the Bob Hope Theatre – with its strips of multi-coloured, flashing neon lights and smoke machines – makes it ideal for panto. Football, racing and rugby all have packed fixture lists on Boxing Day. In an age when the environment is high on the political agenda, fans need an option other than their … [Read more...] about John Grogan: All I want for Christmas is Boxing Day trains
St Michael’s Hospice re-opened its newly refurbished shop in Battle High Street just in the St Nick of time for Christmas shoppers to pick up some festive bargains on Thursday, December 7. The shop has had an extensive re-fit, bringing it up to date with a fresh interior and new signage. St Michael’s retail manager Alex Knight says the refurbishment would not have been possible without the generosity of Network Rail’s Thameslink Programme, London. “All the works were completed to a very high standard and the feedback we have had from both our dedicated volunteers and customers has been fantastic,” he said. “Our thanks go to all those who gave up their time to help with the shop refurbishments, in particular Lindsay and Martin Chatfield from Network Rail’s Thameslink Programme for their help with this project.” Programme manager Lindsay Chatfield, said: “We wanted to get involved with a charity that was local to our home so that my … [Read more...] about Shop re-opens in the St Nick of time for Christmas sales
