The head of the Army today says the UK must be ready for war with Russia. Four months on from Vladimir Putin's invasion of Ukraine, General Sir Patrick Sanders is set to compare the assault to the rise of Nazi Germany . He will say that Britain is facing its "1937 moment" and must be ready to "fight and win" to ward off the threat from Russia. In his first public speech as Chief of the General Staff , Sir Patrick will say the UK must be prepared to "act rapidly" to contain Russian expansionism. Nato last night pledged to massively increase its forces available on high alert to more than 300,000 troops, a more-than seven-fold increase. Sir Patrick's intervention is likely to put pressure on Mr Johnson to maintain the size of the Armed Forces after plans were announced to reduce troop numbers in a move to a more modern military. Defence editor Danielle Sheridan reports that, in a separate speech today, Ben Wallace, the Defence Secretary, is to call for increased … [Read more...] about Tuesday morning news briefing: General says UK must be ready for war

Troop cuts will leave the Army at breaking point, says Lord Dannatt
Troop cuts are “madness” and will put the Army at breaking point, its former head has warned. General Lord Dannatt spoke out against the Government’s decision to cut the Army by 10,000 soldiers over the next few years, despite the war in Ukraine. It comes after Boris Johnson agreed to increase the defence budget to 2.5 per cent of GDP by the end of the decade. However, Lord Dannatt said it “makes no sense whatsoever” to go ahead with the cuts to troops, set out in last year’s Integrated Review, when Nato plans to put 300,000 troops at high readiness. “It’s a mere fact of life we’ll break the remainder of our Army if our Army is not large enough … to do what the government of the day wants us to do,” he told Sky News. “You can’t make people work endlessly with too small numbers. So numbers in the terms of our land forces really, really matter.” Lord Dannatt called on the Government to reverse the cuts and instead increase its investment in “our land warfighting … [Read more...] about Troop cuts will leave the Army at breaking point, says Lord Dannatt

The Queen has made her second appearance of the day as she triggered the lighting of the principal Jubilee beacon at Windsor Castle. At the same time thousands of beacons were lit in villages, towns and cities across the UK to honour the Queen's 70-year reign. Her Majesty started the ceremony from the quadrangle at Windsor Castle, with the Duke of Cambridge representing his grandmother, alongside other members of the Royal Family, at Buckingham Palace, the site of the "Tree of Trees" principal beacon. Although traditionally the principal beacon would be set on fire, this year it took the form of a near-70ft light installation. At Windsor Castle, the Queen, wearing a green jacket, gloves and glasses, pressed the quadrangle to start the lighting of the Jubilee. As she walked from the castle's sovereign entrance into the Quadrangle, the Queen was greeted by more than 100 people who live within the walls of the royal home and were invited to the event. Chief Yeoman … [Read more...] about Platinum Jubilee: Queen triggers lighting of Jubilee beacons across UK

Heathrow chaos as hundreds lose luggage and airlines ‘fish passengers out of queues’
Heathrow has been hit by another day of travel chaos with hundreds of passengers left without luggage and caught up in lengthy queues. Huge lines were seen snaking around the outside of the London airport this morning, as it continues to be hit by staffing shortages. Tensions appeared to boil over at one point, with "some flare-ups" being reported between the public and stressed-out staff. Airlines were even forced to "fish" customers out of security queues for final calls, said another passenger, who spent two and a half hours waiting inside the airport. Footage capturing "hundreds of cases" piled up at baggage reclaim, which is the responsibility of the airlines and their ground handlers, was also posted to Twitter this morning. It is the third day in a row that Heathrow has faced delays, after travellers compared the scenes to something out … [Read more...] about Heathrow chaos as hundreds lose luggage and airlines ‘fish passengers out of queues’
