Connecticut officials said two people in New Fairfield and Danbury were killed in separate accidents when trees fell on their trucks, including a woman whose three-year-old child escaped injury. An 11-year-old New York girl was killed when a large tree toppled onto the car she was in. More than 148,000 utility customers in New York were without power early on Wednesday. In Connecticut, the state’s two major utilities reported 90,000 without electricity, most in the western part of the state. An official said it could take days to return the power. Internet giant Amazon is holding an event in North East designed to help small businesses in the region to get more from the digital economy. The company is working with business support group Enterprise Nation to put on an Amazon Academy event at the Crowne Plaza hotel in Newcastle on June 5. Amazon Academy events are taking place this year in Newcastle, Glasgow and Cardiff, following the success of similar sessions in London, Manchester, Edinburgh and Birmingham which were attended by more than 1,200 business owners. The event aims to give SMEs advice and practical support on using new technologies to grow their business and comes after research by Amazon that showed UK small businessess selling on its Marketplace achieved export sales of £2.3bn last year, supporting around 85,000 jobs nationally and an estimated 2,000 in the North East. The former millionaire hotelier who sold his successful business and founded and financed a cancer charity is one of the new names which have been added to the ranks of Tyneside’s local heroes. Brian Burnie sold his Doxford Hall Hotel and land in Northumberland with the proceeds going to his Daft as a Brush Cancer Patient Care, which now has 350 volunteers and operates 25 ambulances. The custom-made vehicles transport, free of charge, to and from hospital outpatients who are undergoing chemotherapy and radiotherapy cancer treatment. On Thursday, Brian was among the four new names for NewcastleGateshead’s riverside “Walk of Fame”, as nominated by local people for having made a significant contribution to the region over the past 60 years. The Commonwealth Games is underway, with 71 nations sending athletes to Australia for the competition. Unlike in the Olympics, the Commonwealth Games see Great Britain compete as separate nations, with England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales all sending teams. In addition, the likes of the Isle of Man and the individual Channel Islands send their our athletes to represent themselves too. The multi event competition is running in Australia’s Gold Coast until Sunday, April 15. The BBC is broadcasting the action on BBC One, BBC TWO and the BBC Sport website.
