Crisis-hit Sri Lanka has enough petrol left for only one day, new leader warns
Sri Lanka only has enough petrol stocks to last a single day, with the possibility of power outages lasting up to 15 hours a day, the country's new prime minister has warned. In his first address to the nation since his controversial appointment last week, Ranil Wickremesinghe said there is also "grave concern" about the shortage of 14 medicines, with a particular lack of heart disease drugs and the anti-rabies vaccine - the latter of which has no alternative treatment. "Payments have not been made for four months to suppliers of medicine, medical equipment, and food for patients," said Mr Wickremesinghe. He warned that the next couple of months "will be the most difficult ones of our lives. We must prepare ourselves to make some sacrifices and face the challenges of this period". It comes as the country's power minister, Kanchana Wijesekera, told people not to join the long fuel queues that have galvanised weeks of anti-government protests. North Korea’s Kim orders military to help curb COVID-19 outbreak
North Korea's leader Kim Jong Un ordered his military to respond to a surge in suspected COVID-19 infections. Late last week, Pyongyang for the first time acknowledged that the country had faced any COVID cases at all, before state media began to rapidly report about it spreading "explosively" across the reclusive country. Health authorities said on Monday that eight more people had died, and an additional 392,920 were newly found to have feverish symptoms. That brings the official death toll to 50 and illnesses to more than 1.2 million. Kim ordered the deployment of the "powerful forces" of the army's medical corps to "stabilize the supply of medicines in Pyongyang City," North Korea's capital, state news agency KCNA reported on Monday. Kim also reportedly criticized health officials over what he called a botched pandemic response , saying medicine supplies weren't being distributed to pharmacies in time because of their "irresponsible work attitude" and lack of … [Read more...] about North Korea’s Kim orders military to help curb COVID-19 outbreak
Germany scales back COVID-19 restrictions despite high infection rate
Germany is scaling back its COVID protection measures as the amended Infection Protection Act came into force on Sunday. However, some scientific experts consider this step premature. The average daily infection rate remains high, and another 132,000 people were infected within 24 hours. German Health Minister, Karl Lauterbach, stressed that the legal basis for the restrictions was the threat of overload in the health system. According to Lauterbach, he was only able to enforce restrictions in particularly affected regions instead of the entire country. It's now up to the federal states to put in place stricter measures if required. In Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, for example, the state government decided to extend measures such as the obligation to wear masks indoors until the beginning of April, because occupancy rates in hospitals in the region are higher than ever during the pandemic. … [Read more...] about Germany scales back COVID-19 restrictions despite high infection rate
North Korea: More than a million Covid cases feared
Published 6 hours ago Share close Share page Copy link About sharing Related Topics Coronavirus pandemic North Korea's leader Kim Jong-un has lambasted health officials and ordered the army to help distribute medicine, as a wave of Covid cases sweeps through the country. More than a million people have now been sickened by what Pyongyang is calling a "fever", state media said. Some 50 people have died, but it's unclear how many of those suspected cases tested positive for Covid. North Korea has only limited testing capacity, so few cases are confirmed. North Koreans are likely to be especially vulnerable to the virus due to lack of vaccinations and a poor healthcare system. A nationwide lockdown is in place in the reclusive country. State media said Mr Kim led an emergency politburo meeting at the weekend where he accused officials of bungling the distribution of the … [Read more...] about North Korea: More than a million Covid cases feared
Covid: What will the pandemic look like in North Korea?
By Thom Poole & Robert Greenall Published 1 day ago Share close Share page Copy link About sharing Related Topics Coronavirus pandemic For almost two-and-a-half years, North Korea has stuck to its claim it has seen no cases of Covid-19. Not any more. This week, the country confirmed its first infections. The highly reclusive nation had responded to the pandemic by closing its borders, although few believed it had really managed to escape the virus. Now, the authorities are not only acknowledging the virus' presence but declaring an all-out battle to control it, with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un calling it the "greatest turmoil" to fall on the nation since its founding. A national lockdown is in place. Hardly anywhere in the world is untouched by Covid. Cases have been recorded at the base camp of Everest and in Antarctica. Individual nations' responses to the pandemic … [Read more...] about Covid: What will the pandemic look like in North Korea?
The sky’s the limit for beloved pets on their charter flight home
In October, if everything falls into place, an 787 Dreamliner charter flight will depart London Heathrow bound for Australia with a very unusual passenger list . On board, in the cabin sharing airline seats with passengers, will be up to 40 pets . The charter flight is in response to the difficulties expats have experienced in getting their animals to and from Australia. It’s a feat that involves rabies tests, import permits and booking space at the Department of Agriculture, Water and the Environment’s Post-Entry Quarantine facility in Mickleham for the compulsory 10-day quarantine stay. Airlines have also stopped flying many dogs, including snub-nosed breeds, in cargo holds due to fears they will have difficulty breathing and might die. Australia’s Morrison launches campaign days before election, as Liberals trail Labor in polls
Australia’s embattled prime minister on Sunday officially launched his conservative party’s campaign less than a week before elections, highlighting the nation’s early success in containing the pandemic and its strong economic recovery. Prime Minister Scott Morrison’s coalition trails the centre-left Labor Party opposition in most opinion polls as the administration seeks a rare fourth three-year term in elections on Saturday. Morrison focused the party launch on economic management, which has traditionally been regarded as the strength of his conservative Liberal Party. He described the election as “a choice between a strong economy or a weaker one that only makes your life harder, not better”.
