Nintendo Switch Sports is no longer top of the UK retail sales chart, as the new PS5 console bundle has a major impact on the top 10. It may be one of the worst summer game droughts in recent memory but, surprisingly, the UK does have a new number one this week, although it’s not as a result of a new release – or at least not a new software one. Horizon Forbidden West has returned to the top spot not just because the PlayStation 5 in general is back in stock but because a new bundle includes the game by default. Even though it’s a digital copy it’s counted in the retail charts because it’s part of a boxed product. There were no genuine new entries in the top 10 but a little lower down, at number 20, Vampire: The Masquerade – Swansong did manage to do surprisingly well. Borderlands developer Gearbox bought by THQ Nordic – where does that leave Borderlands 4?
In a surprise move Gearbox has been bought by the publisher of Darksiders, but there’s uncertainty as to whether they’ll publish the next Borderlands. As soon as Microsoft paid $7.5 billion for Bethesda there were warnings that bigger games companies would be snapping up smaller ones as the industry underwent a worrying period of consolidation. That’s exactly what seems to be happening, although surprisingly the buyer of Gearbox Entertainment is Embracer Group, the parent company of THQ Nordic, who paid $363 million for them. Gearbox had let it be known they were interested in being bought but the surprise here is that Microsoft, or a rival like Sony or Amazon , didn’t snatch them up instead. You would’ve thought that Take-Two would’ve been the obvious choice, since they publish the Borderlands games, but that’s not how things have worked out. That leaves some doubt as to who exactly will be publishing Borderlands 4, or whatever the next game is, since while … [Read more...] about Borderlands developer Gearbox bought by THQ Nordic – where does that leave Borderlands 4?
New Borderlands game will be ‘the big one’ says Gearbox’s Randy Pitchford
The head of Gearbox has claimed the developer is working on ‘some amazing stuff’, implying Borderlands 4 or something even bigger. There was, for no reason that has ever been explained, a seven year gap between Borderlands 2 and 3 but it’s very unlikely you’ll have to wait that long for another. The fact that there’s a Borderlands movie coming out soon and Gearbox are now owned by THQ Nordic, who likely want a quick return on their investment, suggests a new game won’t be far off and now Gearbox boss Randy Pitchford seems to have confirmed exactly that. He was initially responding to rumours that Gearbox is only assisting on a new Borderlands game but made it clear that they will be the lead developer of any future games in the franchise. The rumours were understandable because, peculiarly, although THQ Nordic owns Gearbox, Take-Two are still the publisher of Borderlands. Despite that fact, Pitchford is adamant that Gearbox are ‘working on some amazing stuff’, … [Read more...] about New Borderlands game will be ‘the big one’ says Gearbox’s Randy Pitchford
