We need to get better at separating our personal lives and work lives. But it’s easier said than done. Since the first lockdown in March 2020, working from home has been on the rise. While some people will have returned to the office, hustle culture and toxic productivity have allowed work to creep in and take over a lot of our personal lives. Research found that UK workers have increased their working week on average by 25%, partly because the usually daily commute has been replaced by extra hours sat in front of a laptop screen. With social media apps such as Linkedin and work emails on all our mobiles, it’s hard to create boundaries. It can be tempting to click on the notification when you are relaxing on your phone. 58% of employees have been using their personal devices for work since the start of the pandemic. You might think it’s OK because you weren’t ‘busy’ anyway, but if you start allowing your work life into the rest of your life, you will begin to … [Read more...] about How to actually switch off and relax after work

Workers trudging miles through the rain because of Tuesday's Tube strike in London would have felt that their troubles were as nothing compared with the horrors unfolding in Ukraine. Nor would they have been searching for any connection between the industrial action called by the RMT union and Vladimir Putin’s blood-soaked invasion of a sovereign country. Yet the RMT, and particularly its assistant general secretary Eddie Dempsey, have long-standing sympathies for the pro-Putin separatists who have been fighting government forces in the east of the country for almost a decade. Dempsey is one of the most high-profile signatories to a Stop the War Coalition statement last week that criticised Nato for showing “disdain for Russian concerns” in Ukraine. It caused a huge row within the Labour Party because 11 of its MPs had originally signed the statement, all of whom withdrew their support for it on the orders of Sir Keir Starmer. A Labour frontbencher described the Stop the … [Read more...] about How close is the RMT union to Vladimir Putin’s Russia?

The boy, who claimed he acted in self-defence and denied murder, held his head in his hands as he was convicted on Tuesday afternoon to cheers from more than 20 members of Ava's family sitting in the public gallery. A 20-second clip showing the stabbing was played during the trial, leaving her family in tears. The boy had previously pleaded guilty to possessing an offensive weapon after he was found with a flick knife that had a 7.5cm blade.
