After years of waiting the DLC for Cuphead is finally here, with more rock hard enemy bosses and 1930s style cartoon surrealism. Now that Elden Ring has proven such a massive hit, it’s going to be interesting to see whether other publishers and developers consider the debate over unusually difficult games to be over. Predecessor Dark Souls started the argument and encouraged many games, both those similar in style and otherwise unrelated, to dare to be difficult. It was into this climate that Cuphead was released in 2017 and became another unexpected success, and now it’s finally got its long promised DLC. Apart from being really, really hard, Cuphead has no other similarities to Dark Souls, since it’s a 2D platform shooter inspired by old school arcade games like Contra and Metal Slug. That’s unusual enough in this day and age but it’s presented in the style of a 1930s cartoon, complete with ‘rubber hose’ style animation and creepy looking character designs. The end … [Read more...] about Cuphead: The Delicious Last Course review – animation hour

Indigenous Karipuna take Brazil to court over Amazon deforestation
The Brazilian Amazon is at acute risk. Exploitation of the forests and violence against Indigenous peoples have intensified dramatically under the government of President Jair Bolsonaro. Studies have shown that territories managed by Indigenous communities are better preserved and richer in biodiversity. But the institutions charged with protecting both the environment and Indigenous rights have been systematically weakened over the past four years. Illegal logging on Karipuna land This has been a boon for criminal gangs, and illegal mining, deforestation and land grabbing have escalated. The Karipuna people in the Brazilian state of Rondonia are taking their fight against these threats to country's highest legal authorities. Their territory covers 153,000 hectares (nearly 600 square miles) and has been officially recognized by Brazil's government since 1998. Yet, in 2021, Karipuna land was among the eight most illegally deforested Indigenous territories in Brazil. Using candy and jam to protect Brazil’s Amazon rainforest
Tapirs, jaguars, and giant armadillos are some of the 430 species of mammals that share a home with Luiz Henrique Lopes Ferreira in Brazil's eastern Amazon . Ferreira makes and sells sweets, jams, and liqueurs from more than a hundred varieties of local fruit trees. The 22-year-old is part of a new generation showing how forest communities with economic opportunities can help promote biodiversity protection and prevent deforestation. He lives in the Tapajos Arapiuns Extractive Reserve, which spans over 640,00 hectares (1.58 million acres) almost 90% of which is covered in forest. It is home to over 370 different types of bird, 99 species of fish and around 13,000 people, mostly Indigenous and mixed heritage caboclo communities. The Amazon rainforest is rich in biodiversity but many species are now under threat Identifying himself as Indigenous, Ferreira says that although he was born in Manaus, the capital of Amazonas State, the forest has been his real home since his … [Read more...] about Using candy and jam to protect Brazil’s Amazon rainforest

With the Tories in turmoil, steel helps Boris Johnson show his mettle
Boris Johnson’s move to extend tariffs on imported steel by two years — a probable breach of World Trade Organisation rules — was welcomed by protectionist MPs from both sides of the political aisle. Industry also predictably lauded the decision, saying it will be protected from artificially cheap imports. Much like fishing, steel carries with it a disproportionate amount of political focus compared to its size — in 2020 the £2bn it contributed to the economy was the equivalent of just 0.1pc of total economic output and 1.2pc of manufacturing. But as the industry likes to point out: everything is made of steel. The metal goes into cars, aircraft, new buildings and the machinery that forms almost everything else. Without it, steel insiders say the logic of having a manufacturing industry in the UK would be considerably weaker — a fact that will not be lost on the Prime Minister. The move was pegged as an effort to “protect the steel sector”, Trade Secretary Anne-Marie … [Read more...] about With the Tories in turmoil, steel helps Boris Johnson show his mettle
Flawless Lewis Hamilton wins Canadian Grand Prix to slash Sebastian Vettel’s lead in the F1 championship
At one stage in the Canadian GP it seemed as if Lewis Hamilton was about to pull back all of his 25-point deficit to Sebastian Vettel, as the Englishman was leading comfortably while the German was in the pits having a new front wing fitted to his Ferrari. In the end, however, though he dominated to win his sixth Canadian GP on the tenth anniversary of his maiden success here a decade ago, finishing ahead of team-mate Valtteri Bottas and Daniel Ricciardo, Vettel was able to fight back to fourth place and limit the damage as he left Montreal still 12 points to the good. Hamilton was not too disappointed by that twist, happily savouring his 56 th career victory and his sixth here. The 2017 Formula 1 grid Show all 20 “It’s been an incredible weekend, and I couldn’t be happier,” he said. “For the team to come away from Monaco, where everyone was scratching their heads, it was fantastic that we all just wanted to work together, In five … [Read more...] about Flawless Lewis Hamilton wins Canadian Grand Prix to slash Sebastian Vettel’s lead in the F1 championship
Remarkable friendships from the animal world
In the leafy Pine Barrens of southern New Jersey lies a very different kind of farm: the astonishing Funny Farm, a not-for-profit animal sanctuary open to the public two days a week, created by New Jersey's own Doctor Doolittle, Laurie Zaleski. Every animal here is a rescue – abused, abandoned, disabled – and Zaleski has healed and protected more than 600 animals over the last 20 years, from retired racehorses to raucous roosters. "We have 115 roosters," she said. And it sounded like it! Correspondent Lesley Stahl asked, "For those people who have never been here, never even heard of the Funny Farm, how would you describe it?" "I say Heaven on Earth, especially for animals," Zaleski replied. "And for people, because when you walk through the gates, you can feel the inner peace and harmony, because they all get along here. "My mother had the original Funny Farm, and she said it's full of animals and fit for lunatics!" laughed Zaleski. As she writes in her book, "Funny Farm: … [Read more...] about Remarkable friendships from the animal world

Nature in crisis: How can we prevent biodiversity loss?
The world is currently witnessing biodiversity loss at a rate and scale unprecedented in human history. Over 1 million species are at risk of extinction. Many are disappearing before we have had a chance to discover them. Climate change, pollution and disappearing habitats are among the forces that have pushed nature toward a cliff edge. The situation is so severe that scientists say we are facing the " sixth mass die-off " — the scale of which has not been seen since the dinosaurs were wiped out 65 million years ago. Yet 2022 presents a window of opportunity, with the UN Biodiversity Conference (COP15) in Canada set to bring together world leaders to discuss a road map to deal with the crisis in nature. In our latest Global Ideas web special we take a deep dive into why protecting biodiversity is so critical, and what the concrete and effective solutions are to tackling the problem. 'Biodiversity loss is the greatest threat to humanity' What impact does … [Read more...] about Nature in crisis: How can we prevent biodiversity loss?
