Keira Walsh: ‘The mentality now is all about the team winning, rather than individuals’

July 2, 2022 by www.telegraph.co.uk

Sitting down for a chat in the peaceful surrounding of FC Basel's sun-soaked training ground, England midfielder Keira Walsh's calm demeanour epitomises the tranquility of the rolling, green hills in the distance behind her as well as the atmosphere in the whole Lionesses' squad. And it's because one word appropriately sums up the feeling in the group: relaxed. Not the sort of relaxation that resembles a holiday, nor complacency - on the contrary, the intense focus to training is clear to see too - but the kind that oozes from a group that evidently know that, whatever challenges might come their way in the upcoming Euros, their head coach has given them the confidence and the tools to find on-pitch solutions. This has been evident in England's three victories in June's warm-up games - all of which were still level at half-time - as their strength in depth helped them to eventually coast to 3-0 , 5-1 and 4-0 victories. Yet arguably the pressure on this squad to deliver has … [Read more...] about Keira Walsh: ‘The mentality now is all about the team winning, rather than individuals’

Novak Djokovic overcomes plucky Centre Court test to reach Wimbledon quarter-finals

July 3, 2022 by www.mirror.co.uk

NOVAK DJOKOVIC was given a surprise scare last night - by an unseeded wild card known as Dutch Tim. But the defending champion eventually showed his class against Wimbledon debutant Tim van Rijthoven to win 6-2 4-6 6-1 6-2. Centre Court rang out with cries of "Come on Tim" that hadn't been heard so often here since the days of Tim Henman as the locals took the little-known 25-year-old to heart. Van Rijthoven, whose career has been plagued by injury, is the first wild card to make it this far since 2015 and the world number 104 earned plenty of new fans with his plucky play. He broke six-time champion Djokovic's serve after an epic second-set rally on his way to levelling the match at one set apiece. But the top-seeded Serb roared back to win five games in a row on his way to clinching the third set, before squeezing over the line just before the 11pm curfew. The World No. 1 started effectively, bursting into a 3-0 lead in the first set before Van Rijthoven got his first … [Read more...] about Novak Djokovic overcomes plucky Centre Court test to reach Wimbledon quarter-finals

Beth Mead exclusive: ‘I wanted my team-mates to do badly’

June 22, 2022 by www.telegraph.co.uk

It is not something she is proud of, but, as the 27-year-old admits, it was bitterness that inspired Beth Mead’s outstanding season for Arsenal and return to prominence with England. As one of Sarina Wiegman’s in-form players prepares for the start of this summer’s European Championship on home soil , she reflects on “the lowest point of her career”, and the horrible emotions that came with it. This time last year Mead was in a dark and twisted frame of mind. Left out of an England training camp , long before she was told she would not be going to the Olympics, the forward reveals she spent much of last summer wanting Team GB to fail. Hurt and annoyed, the former Sunderland player was plagued by negative thoughts to the point that she wanted some of those picked to underperform. She wanted people to realise it was a mistake to leave her at home. Mead hated herself for it, but the feelings of rejection had caused this uncharacteristic animosity. She did not blame Hege Riise, … [Read more...] about Beth Mead exclusive: ‘I wanted my team-mates to do badly’

Gabriel Jesus delighted to now have Gabriel and Gabriel Martinelli as Arsenal team-mates

July 6, 2022 by metro.co.uk

Arsenal new boy Gabriel Jesus has admitted he’s delighted he can now play alongside, rather than against, Gabriel and Gabriel Martinelli at the Emirates. The Brazilian striker completed a £45million to north London earlier this week, bringing to an end his five-year stay at the Etihad. Mikel Arteta’s transfer strategy has revolved around signing Jesus this summer and the Spaniard now wants to switch his attention to other areas of the squad. A move to the Emirates provides Jesus with the opportunity to become the club’s first choice striker and he’s part of a growing clan of Brazilian players at the club, joining defender Gabriel and fellow forward Martinelli in the capital. And Jesus says he’s happy he can now call the pair team-mates, rather than having to face them again. ‘I’m so happy with him, [Martinelli],’ Jesus said. ‘When I saw him come to Arsenal I was not surprised because I knew he had the quality to play in a big club in Europe and Brazil. I’m so … [Read more...] about Gabriel Jesus delighted to now have Gabriel and Gabriel Martinelli as Arsenal team-mates

Striker hilariously trolled by opposition after missing two costly penalties

July 6, 2022 by www.dailystar.co.uk

Corinthians have ruthlessly trolled Boca Juniors star Dario Benedetto after the striker missed two crucial penalties to send the Brazilian outfit through to the Copa Libertadores quarter-finals. The two sides locked horns once again in a feisty clash in Argentina after the first leg of the last 16 tie ended goalless in Brazil. Neither team were able to break the deadlock again - but Benedetto did have a golden chance to change that. The 32-year-old could have given Boca Juniors the lead from the spot in the first-half - but he failed to convert his penalty. And the Argentine ace had his head in his hands again when he missed another spot-kick in a tense shootout to decide the match.
