It's Beefy and The Beast, in the city which specialises in fairy tales. But Beefy is dreaming of a fairytale finish in Las Vegas which doesn't end with the Beast living happily ever after. Because Beefy is Liverpool's former World light-middleweight champion Liam Smith. The Beast is Jaime Munguia, the current WBO champion. And in the small hours of Sunday morning the two nicknames will go head to head at the Hard Rock Casino. Nicknames abound in boxing. When Liam won his world title in 2015 he beat an American who revelled in the nickname Apollo Kid. John Thompson's explanation for the appendage was detailed and decorative. “Kidd is spelled with two Ds,” he proclaimed “and while I am not a child, I am youthful at heart. “Apollo comes from the God of Light. Apollo is also very talented, as I am, and Apollo also comes from Apollo 11 1969, when Neil Armstrong stepped on the moon and said ‘This is one small step for a man, one giant leap for mankind.’ … [Read more...] about Will Beefy and The Beast have a fairytale ending?

Conor Benn in action against Chris Truman (pic Lawrence Lustig/Matchroom Ringside) Benn blasted his way to a four-round win over Chris Truman, of Birmingham, who was outgunned from the start and caught by a stream of steady shots. “He’s still learning, but he’s going to be a world champion, believe me,” said West Ham’s old Dark Destroyer, adding his praise for the work of trainer Tony Sims who coaches Benn jr at the Matchroom gym. Solid left hooks and powerful uppercuts saw the Midlands’ fighter drop to the floor in the fourth round and referee Mark Lyson sensibly intervened. Benn’s next outing could be a return of his clash with French rival Cedrick Peynaud last December at York Hall when the … [Read more...] about Boxing: Benn ‘will be world champion’ says dad
Forget any doubts about Amir Khan. Forget about ring rust, or a busted career. The former light-welterweight world champion produced a huge statement here on Saturday night on his ring return after two years away with a vicious knockout of opponent Phil Lo Greco, blitzing the Canadian and dropping him twice in under 39 seconds. Khan’s blistering fists did all the talking he needed. Speed kills, they say in boxing, and Khan’s hand speed has always been dangerous early in fights. Some perspective is needed, given that Lo Greco is not an elite fighter, yet he went the distance with former world champion Shawn Porter, and Khan joined current world welterweight champion Errol Spence as the only other boxer to stop Lo Greco. Khan delighted a sold-out arena here beside the Mersey, going to work with a determined immediacy, looking fast, precise and emphatic. It was an electrifying left-right that was unleashed by Khan for his first knock-down of his opponent, followed up by a … [Read more...] about Amir Khan defeats Phil Lo Greco by TKO inside 40 seconds on return to the ring

He admits he was once a “devil child” who mixed with the wrong people – now boxer Harley Benn is keeping kids off the streets and away from knife crime. And it’s all thanks to the life skills he learned in the ring. The son of ex-World Champ Nigel Benn holds one-to-one sessions with troubled youngsters where they learn respect and how to manage anger issues – while keeping healthy too. Middleweight Harley, 21, says: “I was a devil child myself and went through a bad phase. “I got in with the wrong crowd. I was being disrespectful and didn’t really know who I was. “Nowadays there’s no such thing as a fist fight between young adults and teens – it all seems to be with weapons. “The more kids that are off the street turning their energy into something positive the better.” Harley, whose dad Nigel, 54, left his mum Lisa before he was born, turned pro two years ago. In the past the father and son have … [Read more...] about Nigel Benn’s son admits he was a “devil child” before boxing saved him
