Sarah Smith @BBCsarahsmith on Twitter Published 2 October 2020 Share close Share page Copy link About sharing Five days a week, every week, Nicola Sturgeon appears on TV, taking questions about her coronavirus policies and urging every one of us to abide by the rules. So for the MP who has committed the most egregious breach of the regulations - possibly of the law - to be one of her own is acutely embarrassing. The SNP leader who has been quick to condemn others for breaking the rules has made no attempt to defend or excuse Margaret Ferrier. Who is Margaret Ferrier? This is the first minister whose chief medical advisor resigned for breaking lockdown rules back in April and who demanded the sacking of the PM's chief advisor Dominic Cummings after he was accused of breaching the regulations. She swiftly condemned Margaret Ferrier's behaviour as … [Read more...] about Margaret Ferrier’s covid breach is embarrassing for Nicola Sturgeon

Liz Truss: I’ll give Sturgeon’s critics protection to scrutinise SNP failures
Nicola Sturgeon’s critics would be handed free rein to take her to task at Holyrood over SNP “failures”, under plans unveiled on Tuesday by Liz Truss. The frontrunner to become Britain’s next prime minister vowed to give members of the Scottish Parliament (MSPs) the same legal protections as MPs when conducting scrutiny of ministers, meaning they would not have to fear legal repercussions for what they say. The fact that MSPs cannot invoke parliamentary privilege meant some of the evidence they obtained during the Alex Salmond affair was never released to the public, while the former First Minister’s own written evidence to Holyrood was deleted following an intervention from prosecutors. Ms Sturgeon has also cited legal restrictions when justifying her refusal to release the outcome of a bullying complaint into one of her former ministers . Ms Truss said the move, also backed by Sir Keir Starmer, would allow MSPs to “more stringently” hold the SNP to account for its … [Read more...] about Liz Truss: I’ll give Sturgeon’s critics protection to scrutinise SNP failures

Scotland’s independence debate is pure poison
It’s not Liz Truss who is the Margaret Thatcher de nos jours , it’s Nicola Sturgeon. I’ve spent the last week at the Edinburgh Fringe, hosting a series of political conversations. One of them was with the Scottish First Minister and the vitriol both she and I attracted had to be seen to be believed. We hear a lot about the bile spewed out by “CyberNat” trolls , and I have experienced it myself. What I hadn’t realised is that the Unionist side of the debate has its equivalents. They’ve been dubbed the “BritNats” or “BritYoons”. They seem to loathe Nicola Sturgeon far more than they hate the independence cause she espouses. It is a phenomenon that female politicians face far more than male. Mrs Thatcher had it in spades, and within a very short time so presumably will Liz Truss. My mistake was to tweet that Nicola Sturgeon was one of the most impressive politicians I had ever interviewed. Almost immediately, the wrath of the “BritNats” descended on me. Rather than explain why I … [Read more...] about Scotland’s independence debate is pure poison
The SNP is using independence as a Trojan Horse to impose extreme trans ideology on Scotland
Scotland is ahead of the game again in terms of progressive politics. Don’t take my word for it; here’s the breathless introduction to a news story published this week in the Dundee Courier : “Scotland leads the way this week as the first country in the world to pass a law ensuring period products are provided free.” It is indeed a welcome step. We’ve all heard the horror stories about young girls who have been humiliated by arriving in their class rooms without the necessary sanitary protection because their families simply couldn’t afford it. So bravo to the SNP-led Scottish government. Let’s hope the UK government follows suit. And yes, there is, of course, a sting in the tail. Isn’t there always? For the new “period dignity officer” for the Tay region, which includes Dundee, has just been appointed. And apparently he’s “absolutely buzzing” about his appointment. Yup, you read that right. T he person appointed to ensure “period dignity” across the region is a man . This, … [Read more...] about The SNP is using independence as a Trojan Horse to impose extreme trans ideology on Scotland
